March 10, 2016 - the annual J. Luce Leadership award will be presented to a group of "Young Global Leaders" at an event on St. John's University campus. One of the prestigious honors will go to Jewels Harrison, an autistic teen from New Canaan, CT.

Despite his significant disability Jewels has learned to communicate through piano and has used his gift to bring awareness to local social issues. He has performed publicly to benefit local causes including the Food Bank of Stamford, The Food Bank of New Canaan, Circle of Friends in Westport and SPEDNET (the Special Education Network) of New Canaan.

Jewels ability has been recognized nationally with appearances in Times Square and coverage on Fox News. The Luce Leadership Award brings him to the international level. He will be joined by youth leaders Thanh Dang of Vietnam, Francisco Donoso of Bolivia, Sophie Alford of Texas, Ramin Herath of New York, RylieAlex Perruci and Rylie Wahl both hailing from Ohio.

The Luce Leadership Award highlights the efforts of teens that do extraordinary work for bettering humanity. Past recipients include the young entrepreneur and philanthropist Seal Bin-Han who founded The World Youth Initiative with co-awardee Isaac Kassin, 16 year old Eugenie Carys de Silva who received her Masters from Harvard and anti-bullying leader Chris Rim. Another Fairfield county teen received the award last year: Alana Galloway of Greenwich, whose pieces on social justice issues have appeared in The Stewardship Report and The Huffington Post.

It is unlikely that Jewels will join former winners at the ivy league schools they currently attend or successful start-ups they run, however he does join them in the spirit of hope for a better future.
