A FED-UP young mum this week blasted the council after they rejected her request for a specialist nursery placement for her autistic son for the THIRD time.

Three-year-old Oscar Hastie currently attends Newmains Family Learning Centre but mum Ainsleigh believes her son needs to be full-time in a language and communication unit to help him settle and develop.

Ainsleigh, 21, of Allanton, said: “Oscar has very little communication and right now isn’t doing well at nursery.

“He gets very distressed and pulls his ears and screams.

“It’s horrible to see.

“He is very young for his age so can’t be moved up a year like the rest of the kids.

“This is then holding his little sister back because they can’t move her into the same class as him because of how he will react to the situation.

“He gets very worked up and starts to hit her.

“It’s unfair on both of them.”

Ainsleigh first applied for the place for Oscar in January and was shocked to receive the rejection letter.

She added: “I couldn’t believe it.

“I thought he would get on the list no problem.

“He clearly needs additional support and the staff at the nursery have all told me that.

“I have their backing but that clearly doesn’t count for anything.

“No-one has even explained to me why they keep knocking him back.

“I just want my son to get the help and support he needs but I feel like the council aren’t interested in helping.

“He’s not settled at Newmains Family Learning Centre and I know it’s not the right place for him to be.

“I don’t know what else to do.”

A council spokesman said: ”As an inclusive authority, the presumption is that all of our children and young people will be educated in their local school or nursery alongside their peers.

“In order to ensure children who have additional support needs can be included in thid allocation, central support resources are allocated to the school or nursery dependant on individual needs.

“Our desire to keep all pupils in their local school or nursery ensures that very young children are not transported across the authority and are, in fact, fully included in provision within their own communities.”
