Police in Germany are investigating whether a 26-year-old autistic woman was kept imprisoned by her mother.
The woman, identified only as Nadine E, was found locked up in a room at her mother’s flat in the Bavarian town of Rosenheim.
There are concerns the case could be similar to that of Josef Fritzl, who kept his daughter Elisabeth captive for 24 years in a concealed basement.
But relatives and friends have told the police Nadine E was only locked up for short periods of time to prevent her from harming herself.
They said the young woman was severely autistic and suffered from psychiatric problems.
Police found Nadine E when they were called to the family's flat after bailiffs tried to enforce an eviction order.
The woman’s 54-year-old mother, named only as Angelika E, fell several storeys down the building’s stairwell in what police suspect was a suicide attempt and was seriously injured.
Police searched the flat and found Nadine E locked inside a room they described as “very dirty”. Officers had to break down the door to gain entry.
"It’s not clear whether she was locked up in the room for years or if it was a short-term disciplinary measure by her mother," Stefan Sonntag, a police spokesman, said.
"My sister is quite unpredictable," Nadine E’s 14-year-old brother told Bild newspaper. "There were times she got aggressive and tried to run away. She was faster than mum."
The boy, who has not been named, claimed his mother locked Nadine E up in the room for her own protection.
“Angelika was overwhelmed last year, she barely slept,” Fritz Danzl, a neighbour, told Bild. “She’s been trying to get her into a home for years.”
Nadine E has been transferred to a psychiatric facility for treatment.
Her mother is in stable condition and recovering from her injuries after her fall.
“The circumstances need to be clarified under which the 26-year-old daughter lived in athe apartment,” the police said in a statement.
“Various offenses, including imprisonment, are possible here. Investigations are ongoing at present.”
