A WIDNES school has been hailed as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted inspectors.
Ashley School received the top grade in four out of five categories for leadership and management, behaviour and safety of pupils, quality of teaching and achievement of pupils.
The newly opened sixth form was deemed ‘good’.
Almost half of the 71 pupils have autistic spectrum conditions whilst others have Aspergers syndrome, social communication needs and other learning difficulties.

Lead inspector Jean Tarry said: “The head teacher provides very effective and purposeful leadership.
“Her continuous drive and ambition to provide a high quality of education for all students are impressive.”
Inspectors praised the outstanding personal achievements of students as their talents in sports, poetry, music and drama, textiles and art are recognised.
Inspectors commended the team effort of everyone working at the Cawfield Avenue school, named after the late Lord Ashley of Stoke who was born in Widnes.
Ms Tarry said: “All staff are experienced and highly trained. The support staff are a huge strength to the school.
“Students’ behaviour is outstanding and their attitudes are exemplary.
“Expectations of what students are capable of achieving are exceptionally high.
“The impact of the quality of teaching is outstanding.”
Inspectors described the teaching of English and maths as ‘strong’ and achievement in reading as ‘outstanding’.
They found that students were ‘very proud’ of their achievements and of their school.
Head teacher Linda King said: “Ashley School has already been hailed as one of the best in the country by autism professionals.
“For the school to be judged outstanding by Ofsted is an extraordinary achievement and for our pioneering sixth form to be judged as good so soon after its opening in September 2014, is a tremendous achievement.
“The report reflects the outstanding progress made by our young people and is testament to the dedication and hard work of my very talented and committed staff.”
