Black powder cap-and-ball

Percussion pistols always interested me....much like the kind Wild Bill Hickok dispatched gunfighters with.

Like everything I have developed an obsession for, I went whole hog with my black powder cap-and-ball obsession. Unfortunately, it’s not as cheap as my obsession with diecast Harleys.

I’m looking to add a Hawken .50 caliber rifle and a Colt Walker to the collection. I hope this obsession lasts longer than some of the others, because it’s pricey and I’d hate for the stuff to end up in the closet next to the diecast models, stamp collection, books, Civil War collectibles . . .

You can put them in my closet Sportster, along with the Civil War collectibles too. I just need to find my medical antique collection in storage and put them all together!

Black powder. Ouch. Pull the trigger today and the shot arrives tommorrow, along with a lot of smoke and wondering if your rifle is still one piece, once it clears.
Am i anywhere near the mark with this assumption. Lol

I have a replica of Wild Bill's Colt Navy. If I could figure out how to post an image, I'd put one here. It's a gorgeous piece.

Something like this? Or did his have the eagle on the grips? I just couldn't imagine having to load all those percussion caps into every cylinder...seemed tedious. But if you shoot and kill what you aim at, I suppose for some that was no big deal!

Here's one about Wild Bill's piece without the "bling." The shooter loads 20 grains, but I load 30 for more punch, as did Wild Bill. I also replicated Wild Bill's shot that killed Davis (not William) Tutt at 75 yards with this same piece:

Nice....personally I don't care for all the engraving...but I like the piece itself.

I'll take one of each of those! I had been looking into a shotgun with a pistol grip (a Mossberg 500 Chainsaw) and that model has a "handle" on top. Would a pistol grip have as good control for a woman? I was afraid a regular shotgun would throw my shoulder out of place.

Yep, lots of fun. I picked up a walker a few months ago. Load up the full 60 grains and it is a monster.

Also working up some black powder loads for my 45/70. 550 grain bullets.

I am not going to derail this thread at all, as if you like these things, why not like them..

But, someones comment here just reminds me how if I were living in a country that "home defence" means having these weapons ready for use in your own home, I'd assume I was either living in a war torn country or I'd be packing my bags and emigrating!! :)

But, dont let me cause a ruffle here, after all I'm surrounded my people with guns and I've only got a stapler, which sort of does the same thing but not quite as messily!

I think "Home defense" can be translated as "excuse for having a really cool possession that I really like."

Thinkin that cap n ball and muzzle loaders are more of a pastimes item. Not too practical for modern tactical situations.

The pistol grip only shotgun is a novelty. A pistol grip with a stock, on the other hand...it can still be shouldered, and when shooting from the hip you can just tuck the stock between your arm and side. There's no advantage to not having a stock.

I believe a gun can be used for both - something one really likes and home defense.
I'm tired of having to defend myself for having one. I have a home alarm, as well, but when the alarm goes off they call first to make sure it's valid. The time it takes them to call then ring for the police I could be dead. So before you judge me for having a gun, try being a woman and living on your own.

Nothing wrong with being vigilant.
I'm with ya 100% my fire extinguisher isn't there because I expect a fire.

I'm not done. You know people are just trying to have a good time talking about what they enjoy. They shouldn't be made to feel guilty about what they like. If you don't have anything good to say in a thread such as this, then please don't contribute to it.

Fair enough.

On that case, here's my choice for a self defence ray gun. I will ask Santa for one for my home defence :p

Nobody better come knocking at my door! ;)

Could you all keep it on-topic please?

Recently we've closed down a thread about guns and gun ownership and we don't want to get this thread to be one of those threads. This thread will get closed down if this derails in a gun ownership debate. By now the message got through (on multiple occasions) that the US has different laws regarding firearms than some countries where a reasonably big userbase of this forum is from. I mean, a lot of European countries have strict "no gun" policies opposed to the US. I guess it's unavoidable to have a "culture clash" based on those ideologies, but for sake of a friendly atmosphere, don't call people out on it.

The reason this thread hasn't been locked is because we think it's fine to discuss something that's specific and a special interest. There's no harm there. Discussing firearms that fall within this category are fine, as are techniques on this topic. Discussing ownership and firearm laws are not something that's part of "black powder cap and ball" as a topic. And I'm not sure if such a national law should have place on an aspie forum. As with the recent amendment on the forum rules on the topic of politics, I think any gun ownership debate could be a topic when it actually is about gun ownership and autism (say; a new law that would state aspies can't have guns for example)

We, as staff, could probably stepped in before, deleted posts, but that way no one would learn anything. People will be unhappy, threads get locked, staff ends up with an angry message in their inbox. Perhaps a post like this one will give people involved in this thread (and I'm not pointing fingers, nor issuing out warning points for this post happening) more insight and more of a learning experience when it comes to posting and commenting in certain threads.

So after this short interruption, you can all go on with your daily business.

Thanks :)

Ahh, b@gger it. Feel free to delete my posts mods, I won't join in any thread like this again. I seem to not be welcome in this subject (which is Okdokey by me).

Im off to stomp around in my ATAT for a bit! :p
