Board games and other non-computer games

Yes... board games, and anything that doesn't require a gamingconsole. I know that many of us aren't social, so a get together with friends to play a game as a group activity might be a rare event for some of us.

Still; does anyone play any (non-digital, so bascially, analog) games from time to time?

While I don't have numerous games around, mostly because of space reasons, I'm willing to say that I prefer said games more than playing videogames. To me, it requires active rules enforcing (which might be interesting/good for an aspie and/or control freak, it might be a good excercise even), a bit of social interaction, anticipating on rather random events... and it's usually a good way to kill a lot of time (which I should add, I don't do just out of boredom; but looking at it, I've spent anywhere from 2 minutes up to 8+ hours on a single game).

Clearly there's a few types of games one can play ranging from Role playing (Dungeons and dragons), quizzes (Trivial pursuit), card games (ranging from Poker up to Pokemon, Magic: The gathering and the like), tabletop wargaming (Warhammer, Hordes etc.), Strategy (Risk, Stratego) and "roll and go" (Monopoly would be a good example). Quite sure there's more than just these types.

As for myself; I "actively" play some card games and wargames with my friend quite regularly. Every now and then I'll end up playing card games with my girlfriend (and no, I'm not talking strip poker)
- Magic: the gathering about 13 or 14 years now (including some tournaments across the country)
- Pokemon, which I can excuse myself of, since I dated girls that were really into it, heh. And the game in terms of mechanics and all, it's quite solid IMO.
- Warhammer 40.000 (should convince my friend to start Warhammer Fantasy as well, heh)

I used to play a lot of Trivial pursuit (which... I somehow should; seeing I have 6 editions of that game around, lol). As a kid I prefered Stratego and Risk over card games which were the game of choice of my mom, since she didn't understand those strategy games rules. "roll and go" I do like from time to time if it at least has some interesting elements to it... I never got into Dungeons and Dragons (or any other role playing games), maybe because it requires setting up appointments and being with a lot of people instead of just 1 vs. 1 games.

Currently I'm thinking if I should invest in Arkham Horror, the game itself looks like fun, and I could technically play it on my own.

So any other boardgamers here? Any recommendations of good board games I might look into? Any pro's and/or con's?

I like board games, but I can never get anyone to play with me, I used to play some by myself. I like monopoly but can't handle being the banker, trivial pursuit, scrabble, phase 10, uno, sequence, scatagories. I don't like card games like hearts, poker, euchre stuff like that, the rules of those kinds of things are confusing to me, maybe because with the rules of each game being different but the cards looking the same.

Every Saturday night I play Risk with 3 of my close friends, then we go get a few cases of beer and drink while we discuss how the game went. I can't get enough of Risk, I have it on my phone and computer!

Tabletop gaming sounds fun!

I used to head a Board Games group in school that plays with these games. :) I understand there could be newer games, so, if you know any new games, feel free to teach me a few, King_Oni. :)

When Kyoko is in her detective/crime investigation obsession mode we play cluedo alot (but then she gets bored and wants something more in depth where she can perform autopsies and interrogate people). We quite often go through phases of playing scrabble and various card games with her as well. We also have the twin peaks board game but haven't played that for a while. Kyoko has lots of kids board games she likes to play with us but her favourite is a vampire game we found in the attic that belonged to my husband.

Sure thing Geordie :) Only thing I don't like about it is when the vampire does get you and bites you, you have to have a bite mark(stamp) on your hand..it takes ages to wash off, if you get bitten 3 times you are dead/out of the game but if you rescue 3 people from the castle you win.

I don't play and games like Risk, D&D, etc.

I do like Chess, Draughts, Othello, Backgammon and Mahjong though.

I'm also seriously into Blackjack (I count cards) and to a lesser extent Poker. I even like Gin Rummy.

And I really like Trivial Pursuit. I regularly just go through the questions on my ow.

I enjoy poker (Texas Hold 'em mostly), Blackjack, Chess, Draughts, Othello (although I'm not sure I play it correctly), Backgammon and Lost: The Board Game. The only interaction I get is with my two younger brothers who are more into computer games so I don't get to play much.

I love Blackjack. I don't know why anyone would play anything else at the casino.

Same, I read you count cards, what method do you use? I've only ever used the Hi-Lo method.

Yeah, Hi-Lo, but I can add to it because I'm a bit of a memory geek, so I tend to have a fairly accurate track.

Magic is my everything of choice for a card game, or cribbage if you must restrict yourself to the original 52 cards. My preferred board games are Scrabble and backgammon.

The only casino games I can stomach are roulette and blackjack - and honestly, keep me away from the casino because I'll either go broke or die of boredom.

I like Chess. And Monopoly. And Risk (but not the old version with blocks, some kind of newer version thing I found somewhere).

Other than that, it's mostly digital.

We used to play Cluedo, Stratego and Monopoly, but my absolute favourites were 500 and Scrutineyes.

500 was great because my parents used to play, so when my sister and I were old enough they taught us so we could stay up late into the night when we went camping. I absolutely sucked at it (probably due to my aspieness in hind sight), but they were fun times.

Scrutineyes remains my favourite to this day. Only released once in 1992, it's a cross between Where's Wally/Waldo and Trivial Pursuit, awesome game.

Growing up I enjoyed board games like Stratego, Monopoly, Careers, Diplomacy and all those complex Avalon Hill wargames like "Blitzkrieg". I especially liked playing their version of football. The one game where I could beat the pants off my older brother without having an extensive understanding of the sport itself.

But "Diplomacy" will probably always remain my personal favorite.

Not sure if this counts as a non-computer/video game since the version of it that I play is an iPhone app, but this is one I like:

Solitaire Chess | Thinkfun

Did anyone here have this as a child (or as an adult)? I didn't, but I think one of my friends did:

I miss playing the game Clashflow. The game it kinda like Monopoly but more advanced. The goal is to get out of the rat race by making investments.
