Boxing dad Mark Wilson raising money for the National Autistic Society with charity bout inspired by five-year-old daughter Maisie
A PADGATE dad is set to strap on the gloves for a charity boxing bout, inspired by his five-year-old daughter.
Mark Wilson will be raising money for the National Autistic Society when he steps into the ring in an event at the Park Royal Hotel in Stretton later this month.
The fight comes after his eldest daughter Maisie, who goes to Bewsey Lodge Primary School, was diagnosed with ADHD, a condition commonly linked with autism.
Rylands Sharks open age chairman Mark boxed at a similar event in February last year at the Select Security Stadium in Widnes, raising £1,300 for charity.
He is hoping to raise a similar total this time around for the NAS.
Mark, 44, said: “We’ve known for some time that Maisie had something wrong but it’s only recently that we’ve had a diagnosis of ADHD.
“I just want to highlight the amount of kids who have got autism and that many who are undiagnosed.
“Autism isn’t something to shy away from – kids who have it can go to college and school and universities, it’s just a condition you have to deal with.
“I think there’s a bit of a stigma attached to autism and I think that’s what the NAS are trying to tackle by bringing it to the forefront.
“It’s for a good cause so I don’t care whether I win, it’s just to raise some money for charity.”
Mark is now well into his eight weeks of training at Smithy’s Gym on Bewsey Road ahead of the bout, which takes place on Sunday, February 26.
He also thank the Warrington Parents and Carers Association for their support of Maisie.
The Avery Close resident added: “Without their help we would not have accessed half of the resources we have for our daughter.”
