DE LEON SPRINGS, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) - Justin Maxwell, of De Leon Springs, is great kid. He's smart, with a lot of energy, and a pretty good throwing arm.
He also has Asperger's syndrome, a form of high functioning autism, and like most 9-year-old boys, he can be a handful for his mom.
He's also the reason Karen Maxwell says she's alive today.
"He's my little hero,” Karen said. “He's a good boy."
Karen isn't well. She was diagnosed Three and a half years ago with an auto-immune liver disease. Her liver is almost completely cirrhotic, and it doesn't process waste, causing toxins to build up in her body.
One afternoon back in April, Karen sat down to rest. She fell asleep and didn't wake up. She was slipping into a coma, doctors told her later. Toxins had built up to dangerous levels in her brain.
"When [Justin] tried to wake me up, he couldn't," Karen told Fox 35.
So, Justin picked up her phone and dialed back the last number in the call log. It was Karen's friend, Tanya Rice, who called 911. Three days later, Karen was home from the hospital, thanks, in part, to Justin's quick thinking.
"I feel happy she's a little bit better now,” Justin said. "I love her so much. We argue sometimes, but I still love her."
And now, while she waits hopefully for a liver transplant that could save her life, Karen just wants her special little boy to be a kid.
"I'm trying to keep his life as normal as I can,” she said. “It's hard to do that in this situation, but still trying, and I'll try until I can't try, because he is only nine."
