Pet Darlene was victim of a poisoner, fears her owner.

AN animal lover has been left devastated after her cat died from suspected anti-freeze poisoning.

Mother-of-six Jane Richardson from Heanor, was left in shock after her three-year-old cat Darlene died.

But the impact on her 17-year-son, who has autism, is of the greatest concern to her, with the teenager being described as a "broken man".

Ms Richardson, 47 said: "The impact on my son has been catastrophic, he hasn't been the same man since – the bond that he had with Darlene was something unique, and one that I had not come across before."

She said her son has Asperger's syndrome, due to which individuals can become intensely attached to animals.

"I'm not sure how he is going to be able to cope going forward. It has been devastating for the whole family. The vet informed us that kidney failure in cats is symptomatic with poisoning – it's absolutely devastating especially as she was only a young cat."

Ms Richardson, who also has a dog and two other cats, claims she was told by a vet who works at the Priory Veterinary Surgery in Ilkeston that three other cats in the area had died due to anti-freeze poisoning.

She said: "I'm not sure why someone would do this, perhaps they have a genuine dislike of cats – or sometimes people hate it when other cats create mess on their gardens."

A spokesman for the Priory Veterinary Clinic said that foul play could not be ruled out, saying: "We have seen cats with kidney failure recently and, while anti-freeze does have the potential to cause this, we cannot say for definite, although it is worrying if someone is deliberately trying to poison cats this way."

The RSPCA says that even the smallest amount of anti-freeze has the potential to cause kidney failure and death. It recommends that, if people see that their cat is vomiting, seems depressed or sleepy, appears "drunk", is experiencing seizures, is having difficulty breathing or if the cat is experiencing increased thirst and urine, they should take their pet to the vet immediately.

RSPCA inspector Rachel Leafe said: "Animals are often extremely curious and will be drawn to food."

We would advise cat owners to look out for the signs that their cat has been poisoned."

Poisoning is a criminal offence under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. The maximum penalty is up to six months in jail and/or a fine of up to £20,000.

You have to make it to jail alive first to do the six months,:rage: I would recomend a new identity on a new continent for a cat killer. I suggest Somallia as a good palace for a cat killer to live, as most of them have likely been eaten there.
