Channeling an obsession to improve ones social skills

One of my biggest struggles with my AS is socialization and making friends. I find that if I utilize one of my obsessions as an "ice breaker" of sorts I can better socialize with others. I am planning to use my love of RC cars to make me get out of the house and socialize with others. Since I was a child I have loved to play with RC cars, was kind of my summer hobby, while in the winter time I was deep into my model trains. Worked well as I dont like being cold, or out in the cold. I have gotten back into the RC car scene again but not into the racing side of it again. That is going to change soon hopefully. I am working on aquiring a 2nd RC10 buggy to race. My original one is restored and only comes out for short and gentle runs. The second one will to race again. I am going to have a body painted up with the autism multi color jigsaw scheme, along with a few stickers to raise awareness and get others talking about it. My wife will have herself a buggy for offroad and her Christmas present is what we call a carpet car or on road race car. Not only will it help me get out and meet others, it is also something my wife and I can share and enjoy together. Cheers Mikie

I really love RC vehicles. One day hoping to have car, boat, airplane and etc

I have 3 RC cars, an original "gold pan" RC10 buggy, a Tamiya Nissan King Cab that needs rebuilt and a new Tamiya Mitsubishi Pajero 4wd SUV that I just built from a kit, still oufitting it with goodies to make it look real. It has working lights, fog lights ect. My wife has a RC10b3 buggy, a Tamiya Jeep Wrangler 4wd with working lights and winch and she will get a new on road race car this Christmas, I have that hidden in my model train room till then. I have been down to one of the indoor tracks in Indianapolis. You should pick up a good hobby grade RC car, they can be found cheap, I got my wife's RC10b3 for $125 in the used area at the shop in Lafayette, IN. All it needed was a battery and charger. It came with everything else. Mikie

Are you running battery powered cars or gas engines? I like the aspect of remote driving a miniature vehicle, the gas ones always seemed nicer to me since they could go and go until out of fuel, and then you could just put more gas in them.

I would watch this video

I thought the headline was referring to an obsessive interest in social skills.

What you are suggesting was easier when I liked horses, because there was a disproportionate amount of other girls my age who also liked horses. Now I just like books. People's interest in books tends to be too specialised to make for discussions, although the real problem is that I am generally into anything but mainstream fiction.

Edit: I take it back, that is not a problem.

My RC cars are all electric With newer battery technology, the run times are a bit longer and you can still recharge them fairly quickly. In that size of car, the only fuel powered ones are Nitro and those tend to be touchy to deal with and get to run correctly. Yes you can run them longer when they run. They are also more expensive. I already had the chargers and some batteries before I got back into this hobby. Mikie

Ah, when I first read the thread title, I thought that the obsession was the act of channelling your social skills, haha :P
