Channeling Mental Energy

Well-Known Member
Given the fact many aspies or HFA people tend to have a higher level of mental energy than normal, I thought about how I could use it to advantage. I was thinking how much time I often spent worrying about things or worrying about my asperger symptoms and I concluded that maybe I could re-channel and discipline my thoughts. I found it does help quite a bit. Well, at least it keeps my mind so occupied, the world around me becomes less of a factor.
Therefore, I now study quite a lot of text books and have very late nights solving theoretical problems. The other night I had to calculate the equivalents of thousandths of a volt into millionths of a volt, using my text book (where the key is provided at the back). I suppose it's a strange idea of "fun" but I find keeping my mind very active does tend to distract attention away from things that would normally bother me.
I also find that even walking around the street, you can become engrossed in an exam question but if you study this way, you learn really really fast. Normally, in a class, you think about some calculation only for the duration of the class and then switch off to go out and see friends and so on. However, if you can try and do exam-type questions even when walking around the street, it's cool how much you can learn.
Often people say they waved to me or sounded their horn and got no response at all.

I used to take a simple fact, say, that there are 16 ounces in a pound, and then try and and reverse-engineer the toughest math question I could that was based on that one piece of knowledge. Once I got older I started with the tough problems and tried to work it out. Even basic stuff like long division and multiplication in my head. I used to hate math but now that I understand the rules it's kind of becoming my buddy.

If only we could use our mental energy like solar power.

I need some maths as I'm into electronics. I drive N.T. people crazy with very precise, detailed questions and often spot the tiniest imperfection in a text book. For me, I need to understand every single process to get the whole picture.
On the other hand my love life (as I sometimes joke) is in tatters. I figured I might have had something going with a girl I liked a lot but it kind of fell apart so I decided not to dwell on the negative too much. Seemed better to channel my energy into something positive.
I may also be doing some voluntary work to help out kids with autism as well as taking care of my friends' German Shep.
I seem to be learning very fast, though. Can spend 3 hours at night trying to answer questions in the book.

I ran into the same kind of thing at work the other day. We started using a pretty simple software program but people were still having problems with it, so I was asked to write out a little user guide for it. Fine. Except I'm the kind of person who wants to know how something works and not just how to make it work, so my guide ended up being much too involved and technical. I should have known, if they can't figure out a simple program they probably don't understand things like copying files.

Ever since I discovered for myself that I was on the Autism Spectrum, I researched all about it. My favorite thing is the immense focus we are capable of when working on our subjects of interest (or obsession). I have been going hard with the Astrophysics studies, and Maths equations for the last while, and can now do multiplications of double digits, up to 39, in my head in around 5 seconds. The focus is amazing. Find your own way to utilize it and you will become very successful, I guarantee that.

This is something I intend to do over the next couple of years. My mathematical/physics related knowledge & skills has really slipped through my fingers over the years. I plan to refocus my energies like you guys did, to achieve this end.

I love a tough problem. Not the real life kind like how to pay the rent, that's too close to home. But something I can sink the teeth of my mind into. It feels really good to solve a hard problem

I sink my mental energy into programming as a hobby, for the times when I'm not wasting it on something useless :) which I should probably be doing less of.
