Church calls for boycott of live action Beauty and the Beast because of gay character!

Thoughts? IMO the Church needs to shut up, it's 2017! No one cares about a gay character in a Disney movie.

Yeah, it's American Christians, isn't it though? I don't know if it's true but it feels like the Church of England is a bit more accepting of gay rights and associated progressiveness. This doesn't surprise me at all really and is barely news worthy. They're being dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st Century like everyone else. At some point in the future all of this stuff with be common place and accepted, we're just at a difficult transition period right now.

If they don't like it, don't watch it. Both of my parents are christain and are actually against gay marriage, but they also respect that they can't control another persons life. So, they simply choose to play no part in the matter.

My only problem with the movie, is that to be brutally honest I don't think Emma Watson's pretty enough to be Belle, she's far from ugly, and she was great in the Harry Potter movies though.

My brain is always looking at another angle. I'm slightly annoyed because Disney chose to announce it. I don't know. If a character is gay, then they're gay. Let the movie speak for itself. THEN let the debates start. To me, this just screams that they want to drum up more interest in the film so people will talk about it. Sure, they risk a boycott from some people but overall, people will see it. They didn't say anything about the 2 moms in Finding Dory, but just included a second of it in the preview. People were talking about it and it didn't seem to affect the success of the movie. Now it's like they have to point it out to make sure everyone knows. It just seems forced to me...Just my opinion though. I plan on seeing the movie.

Edited: You know, if I was in charge of PR for this movie, I probably would do the same thing. They know what they're doing!

Emma Watson isn't a bad actor, but she definitely wasn't the right one for Belle.

I'm not quite sure if I want to see she's not pretty enough, but yeah, she just doesn't seem to fit. She looks very odd as Belle. I'd like to see the movie before I say more though.

Pretty much this. You'd think we'd have been well past the time now when we have to announce this genre or embed it into everything.

I don't much care to see two guys kissing at seven o'clock (that Emmerdale soap) but I can choose not to watch it can't I.

I don't understand. It already has bestiality. Just missing a pedophile maybe a scatophile or two. Maybe in a couple years after they have gained more acceptance. Well, if the story calls for it, and that is what the character really Is into. Fun for all ages, amirite? Haven't had much use for Emma since she started her cringe worthy, social justice, 3rd wave feminist rhetoric. Any "white knights" in the audience?:D

Meh. Not surprising coming from certain Christian sects. Churches can say what they want in the US. But only on a rhetorical level. On the other hand, there's a government of a sovereign nation contemplating banning this film period.

(BBC) Russian officials are coming under pressure to check if Disney's new film Beauty and the Beast breaches the country's law against "gay propaganda".

Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky said action would be taken after the checks while an MP described the film as "shameless propaganda of sin".

I think a boycott on churches would be the appropriate response next time it happens. You know, give them a dose of their own medicine?

The paradox of tolerance and intolerance. Intolerance masked as tolerance is still intolerance.

In my experience the "intolerant" are more tolerant than the "tolerant". This is due, in part, to a self centered definition of tolerance. You have to be tolerant of me, but I don't have to be tolerant of you, because, science b**ches!

So, people that don't normally go to church, will make a public statement that they don't believe in going to church, and that from now on, they will not be going to church. :D that'll show em.

A disney movie has a gay character? *gasp* Who'd have thought? (/sarcasm)

...I agree with LittleLemon about this, it seems like Disney are using this as an excuse for publicity more than anything else, or perhaps because the movie itself hasn't turned out that brilliant so they need another thing for people to focus on besides the quality of it?

I mean, I think it would've made more of an impact, and possibly for the better as far as social attitudes go, if they'd just kept quiet about it and let it speak for itself, let people who see the movie discuss it amongst themselves, etc. Disney have taken an opportunity to potentially positively influence society's perception/acceptance of homosexuals... and turned it into a cheap PR stunt.

Don't forget: We're living in a time where saying words like 'Killer' and 'suicide' in front of young girls is the equivalent of calling them the dreaded C word.

Agreed. It's a twofold marketing strategy. To publicize something deemed positive by a perception of slight majority of the electorate, and to estimate the political "fallout" and loss of box office receipts from a slight minority of the electorate.

No secret to Disney corporate that such issues are both in the court and the forefront of public opinion at this time. And that Disney is determined to capitalize on it.

Either way, it's all about bottom-line income and quarterly returns. Little else.

I was not aware of this social convention. Is this something that's exclusive to young girls, and if so... why? what purpose is this supposed to serve?

There's this new franchise called DC Superhero Girls. Ever heard of Killer Frost? They took the Killer out of her name. I'm referencing how wildly lax-and-conservative this era is.

But, but Killer Croc!?:(. Doesn't that name marginalize males with psoriasis and other rare skin conditions?:D
