Everyone knows about comfort foods.
What about smells, scents?
Especially this time of year with the Holidays here.
What smells give you a sense of comfort, memories, or scents that you just like?
Examples:
Cinnamon Brooms.
I buy several every year when they are available for fall to set around the room.
Fresh baked cookies.
Ahh, walk into a kitchen where fresh chocolate chip cookies just came out of the oven.
Fireplace.
Not only does a fireplace feel comforting, but the smell also adds to it.
In warmer climates, the Yule Log on TV is nice even though there is no smell.
Put your mind to it and it still feels comforting.
A Grain Store.
Those who have not been around farming areas may not recognize this smell, but I always liked it.
A grain store where various grains and fodder are sold for livestock.
It is a nice earthy mix.
Pine Scented Candles.
No explanation needed.
Vicks vapo-rub.
A different one, but it does seem to have an effect on a lot of people.
When I worked in pharmaceuticals, a co-worker was looking at a bottle of Vicks and asked me why does the smell make her feel comfort?
She couldn't place why.
I told her I thought it was because it brought back the feeling of comfort it gave when your mother rubbed it on your neck or chest for a cold
as a child. Or put it in a vaporizer.
A memory smell.
