Coming to terms with a misdiagnosis

Kaylee

Well-Known Member
Hi there. i am new to this site as i am recently coming more to terms with the fact that i was most likely misdiagnosed as a child with ADD.

here is a little about me

i am 23
i was diagnosed with ADD when i was 3 and have been in and out of therapist, consular, and behavioral workers my entire life.
I am a Transgender woman which while not something that is specifically related to my condition is heavily affected my day to day life and i am sure has had some interaction with my aspergers syndrome
While i am technically self diagnosed i have delt with issues that would fall under the aspergers for as long as i can remember.
i have just recently started coming to terms with where my issues and limitations may end and begin while also looking at things i can do or continue to do to make my life less stressful.
i am not 100% sure how much to say here, what to say or if anything i said was considered offensive in any way. i just recently learned that the term Aspie is infact not slang (as it is used outside of the community in some online areas so i am clearly new to the community. as i feel though this community will be a great place as many people seem very supportive and the issues i struggle with most in life will be accepted and understood. i really hope this site is the right fit and can be a great tool for me to use in my day to day life. as well as hoping i can contribute in some way to give back to those who need it

Hi, welcome. I'm am new here too. My sons and husband have been diagnosed with adhd, but really they have aspergers too, and that has been the main issue.
It is sad, but it seems like many people are misdiagnosed with ADD, when it is really aspergers. On the upside, some of the executive function deficits are similar, so some challenges can present similarly.
Anyway, all the best.

Welcome, Kaylee! I didn't find anything you wrote offensive in the slightest.

I am "self-diagnosed" myself; identifying with Asperger's just seemed to make a whole lot of things about me make sense, where before I had been struggling as if I was going to eventually "make it" to some state where I could accept myself.

I hope you enjoy yourself here! :)

Welcome aboard! :) I was improperly diagnosed as ADD and learning disabled, as a child. It wasn't until I self diagnosed at 32, and subsequent professional diagnosis at 33, that I realized the true extent of the difficulties I faced. I have been able to over come most of the minor traits, the the toughest ones still disrupt my life daily/ weekly.

This forum is THE best in my opinion.

Welcome to AC :)

I hope you find us both helpful and friendly here

Hi there. I believe I'm both AS and ADD. Not formally diagnosed, because they didn't have clue about such things in the 1960's. Now, I just don't have the money to go for all the diagnostic testing. My belief, though, is that I am what I am, diagnosis or not. But it certainly helps to have others with whom to discuss our issues. Hope you find it both helpful and pleasurable.

Welcome Kaylee!

Misdiagnosis is an very unfortunate but also very common occurrence it seems. I understand and am a strong supporter of transgender issues as well. With both Aspergers and Trans issues, you have indeed a ton to deal with. I hope you find some solace here..:-) Know that you are very welcome here!!!

Welcome :)

It sounds like you're doing quite a bit of soul searching right now. Hopefully we can do what we can to help you to better understand yourself, and help you to find out whether you feel comfortable with your self-diagnoses. You'll find thst there are a fair few of us who have also diagnosed ourselves, and a few who have been misdiagnosed. I suppose AS is still something that some experts do struggle with, but it is becoming better understood with time.
