Einstein's original quote :

But if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid." Einstein

quote should say

"It will live it's whole life believing you are stupid"

As you are the one who is judging the fish stupidly.

In your face,Einstein!

The fish would likely not accept your judgment of it.

Who else demonstrated that Einstein was wrong today?

What else have you proven wrong that is a generally accepted belief?

Thanks to @Bella Pines for the rebel fish idea.

An unusual feeling.. gloating :)

Mr. Spock: Why would humans judge fish? That's illogical.
Einstein: And what purpose do those pointed ears of yours serve?
Kirk: Never mind. He's dead, Spock.
Bones: Dammit Jim, that's MY line!
Einstein: Who the hell are you guys?
Kirk: Why am I talking to dead people?
M. Night Shyamalan: Good question, Bill.

There are walking fish, aren't there? Wouldn't one eventually climb a tree over millions of years. Is maybe that where apes came from?

And what about flying fish? If one jumped out of the water and got caught in a tree wouldn't it be as logical to assume it climbed up as flew in? Is maybe that where female apes came from?

But would the fish adopt human social mores re judgments?

I guess you're saying - they already did!

Descartes: I think therefore I am.

Nope, thought I only proves that you think, not that you are or are not.
I'm am, therefore I am.

Very good, but if the fish did not know it were a fish, Einstein would be right, and this is what he was getting at.

At least until it grows wise enough to compare itself to others, then then penny drops and the fish rebels.

Yes i think Full Steams idea on that's right. Unless he meant the tree was stupid maybes? ... I like Einstein I think he was Asp. INTP also.

I am quite sure the fish does not know it is a fish.

I am also sure it would not either accept or reject our judgment regardless of whether we were judging it's swimming or climbing ability.

And, in this example, the fish is not even trying to climb a tree.

Einstein is just looking at a fish and judging it.

And that's not very nice :)

I'm sure it knows what it is not: a human, a whale, a peanut butter sandwich, and it is probably capable of comparison since it chooses company of its own kind.

That's as good as knowing it's a fish.

Your argument vapouriser mine by being very literal, but also your own.

"It will live it's whole life believing you are stupid"

So we have to deal with the statement as an abstract.

If we assume the fish has the power of thought. It will not think itself stupid.
Unless it buys into the human bias and judgement being applied to it.
Ie. the fish thinks it should be able to climb a tree.

It is also saying that fish as a whole garner self worth from their tree climbing ability.
And are thus depressed.

Perhaps we are doing them a favor by eating them.

But this guy Einstein seems hopeless in my opinion.

I think the subliminal issue was Einstein was poor at climbing trees.

There is no substantive evidence that Einstein made this statement. It does not appear in the comprehensive collection of quotations “The Ultimate Quotable Einstein” from Princeton University Press. 1

The earliest evidence of a close match known to QI appeared in 2004, and that is decades after the death of Einstein in 1955. The self-help book “The Rhythm of Life: Living Every Day with Passion and Purpose” by Matthew Kelly contained a chapter titled “Everybody is a Genius” which began: 2

Albert Einstein wrote, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” The question I have for you at this point of our journey together is, “What is your genius?”

This quotation alludes to a long-standing allegorical framework. It is inappropriate to judge an animal by focusing on a skill which the creature does not possess. A fish is specialized to swim superbly, and its ability to climb a tree is non-existent or rudimentary. In the domain of education this allegory has been employed repeatedly for more than one hundred years. Hence, this quotation is built on ideas that have been in circulation among educators for many decades.

Just what I expect from an "Einstein defender"

Didn't think this quote to be something that Einstein would write. He usually didn't write in such an esoteric illogical way, so it made such little sense. It's possible that personal letters he wrote may have been misinterpreted. Yet I've found no real reference of this attribution to Einstein.:)

I think the fish knows well it is a fish, and is confident in its abilities. After all it's survival of the fittest out there.

If it's just one person judging the fish by climbing trees, it probably says the judger is stupid. If the majority of people in the fish's world judge it by climbing trees, then the fish likely breaks down and believes it is stupid.

It's just bullying. Bullies often have their own problems and insecurities but those end up permanently off the table of discussion. Nobody says anything about the fish's ability to survive permanently underwater, which the tree climber could most likely never do.
