Curious...

I am curious about the folks on here who are self diagnosed but when they went in to get the formal one done they were diagnosed with something else. What exactly is that something else? I mean what were you diagnosed with if it wasnt ASD?

I just randomly was thinking about it. Ive seen plenty and i mean plenty where the self diagnosed was in fact on the spectrum, but not too many where they werent exactly on the spectrum at all. Do those people fall off the face of the planet?

guys come out, i'm super curious!!!

The problem is diagnosis of males is easier ,females near impossible so probably there are females on the spectrum who are diagnosed as borderline personaliTy disorder or schizophrenia care for the mentally ill in hospital is negligent at best
i young woman in my town hung herself while in a psychiatric hospital
DONT want to say what an emergency doctor said when the police wanted keep her handcuffed! its despicable !!!!
In the UK its a lottery depending on the county you're in

The below are commonly mistaken for ASD
  • Intellectual Disability.
People with severe intellectual disabilities may have many behaviours similar to those of autism but are not necessarily autistic. People who are autistic can also be intellectually disabled.

  • Specific Developmental Disorders.
Some developmental disorders, particularly language disorders, can mimic autism.

  • Schizophrenia.
When schizophrenia develops in childhood, which is rare, it can be confused with autism.

  • Selective Mutism.
In selective Mutism, a child is able to speak in some situations but unable to speak (is mute) in others.

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
Some children with obsessive-compulsive disorder, like those with autism, have unusual interests and repetitive behaviours. But unlike children with autism, children with OCD are able to develop social and communication skills.

  • Reactive Attachment Disorder.
In this disorder, there is usually a history of severe neglect. Language and social skills usually begin to develop after a child is given love and attention.

  • Avoidant Personality Disorder.
This disorder is characterised by anxiety in dealing with social situations.

I am self-diagnosed (after it being suggested by numerous teachers and lecturer's growing up).

my sister is aspie [not diagnosed, but its obvious to my highly strung autdar] she was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder instead of aspergers back when she went to get assessed at 19 [shes 4 yrs older than me]they gave her some beta blockers and told her girls cant get autism, like its a disease you get from shagging the wrong bloke or something.
another one of note,a support staff of mine who was on wrong planet at the same time as me,but she weirdly ended up with a job at my secure residential home, she was diagnosed as having several personality disorders and was told she was a sociopath, her shrink didnt beleive girls could have autism, she had to travel hundreds of miles to an autism specialist who spotted aspergers in her a mile off, and she happens to be one of my most favourite support staffs ive ever had.

there is two people i can think of on an autism forum who were self diagnosed, one of them was female probably mid thirties, very arrogantly speaking on behalf of the whole spectrum despite only just coming to the realisation she might be on the spectrum, she really annoyed me as she spoke for everyone, she talked about seeing a shrink for an ASD diagnosis if i remember,and...she never returned,my spidey senses tell me she was not autistic.
the other person-a guy,he said himself he presented like a female presentation of aspergers-this was long before everyone knew about there being significant differences, and he seemed spectrumy to me but one day he came on,very upset and said he was diagnosed something else [i cant remember what] and said he is sorry for stringing everyone along and making them think he was autistic and that was going to be his last post.
i felt very sorry for him because he clearly did relate to ASD behaviors and traits even if he didnt have the label and he could have stayed and got something out of it,but the forum was very cliquey and immature and were always whingeing about self diagnosis.

ah! so theres a lot of things a person can be diagnosed with besides ASD that mimics the symptoms. thats a little disheartening. I can walk out with just about anything it seems, especially if theyre not trained to know the symptoms in females.
