Ian where the attack took place

A BRAVE dad was attacked with a baseball bat when he confronted a gang of 20 youths who were bullying his autistic son outside his home.

Ian Smith, 43, was horrified to hear a gang had threatened 13-year-old Lewis — who has Asperger’s syndrome — and sent him cruel text messages.

After ushering away a smaller group of teens, Ian was challenged by a bigger gang in a yard near the back of his house.

He asked them to leave, but was head-butted before being hit across the face with a baseball bat.

Ian suffered a broken nose, numerous cheekbone fractures and a blood clot on the brain in the attack — which the gang then boasted about on Snapchat.

Ian's nose was broken in attack Masons

Ian, of Great Baddow, Essex, has been in and out of hospital since the attack on October 26.

He said: “Earlier that evening, my son’s friends came round and said a group of boys were waiting at the back of our house asking for him.

“I told my boy and his friends to go upstairs, but while they were playing PlayStation, he kept receiving texts from the gang.”

The group surrounded Ian’s wife Emma, but together, the couple got the group to “clear off”.

But 90 minutes later, at about 7.30pm, a larger group, returned.

Ian added: “When I heard banging, I expected it to be the same group again.

“But there were about 20 of them, with hoodies and balaclavas. One of them head-butted me, and while my head was swimming, I felt the baseball bat.”

Police have appealed for witnesses Masons

Police initially thought Ian had been struck with a scaffolding pole found lying on the ground nearby.

But Ian says he knows it was a baseball bat because members of the gang boasted about the attack on the social media app Snapchat.

Ian’s son’s condition means he is often picked on by other boys in the area, the family say.

Ian added: “He is scared to go out or to leave his home.

“He lives indoors basically. It is not the first time something like this has happened but enough is enough. It has got ridiculous now.

“They hang around with bats and knives and God knows what else, and on Monday, they had come ready for a fight.”

Essex Police are investigating the attack and have appealed for witnesses.
