David S. Goyer, the prolific writer behind the “Dark Knight” trilogy, is in talks to direct “Masters of the Universe” for Sony, TheWrap has exclusively learned.

Goyer wrote the most recent draft of the script. Sony has set “Masters of the Universe” to be released on December 18, 2019.

Set on the planet Eternia, the story follows a warrior named Prince Adam who turns into the heroic He-Man and battles a villain named Skeletor out to conquer Castle Grayskull.

The “He-Man” franchise began as a successful toy line from Mattel and was turned into a cult hit kids’ TV series in 1983. Four years later, the series was turned into a live-action film starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as his nemesis, Skeletor.

The film is being produced by Escape Artists principals Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch, along with DeVon Franklin. Mattel is also involved with the movie, as its execs Julia Pistor and David Voss will executive produce on behalf of the company. Sony exec Matthew Milam will oversee the project for the studio.

Goyer is repped by WME.

The studio declined to comment.

30 years ago the Masters of the Universe movie was crap IMO, featuring the ultra annoying Gwildor character, who had no connection to He Man apart from obviously being a figure from the movie.

Also, no one under 30 cares about reboots of old franchises, because they weren't even pigments in their Parents' eyes when the originals were out.

The Studio declined to comment? That means they've just started making the thing and they already know it will suck.

This might be interesting,I use to love this cartoon as a kid but the movie they made in the 80s wasn’t that good, while I usually don’t like remakes I think since the first movie wasn’t exactly great this may be better but also go the other way, hopefully they keep a bit closer to the original cartoon story and we actually get to see the origins of He man.

I respectfully disagree.
The past TV shows will often find a way to appear in the current day in some shape or form, whether its an old show or clips from it been broadcast, an errant YouTube video you click on out of curiosity, an older person who watched it telling/showing it to you, watching a spin-off/follow-up that references the original show, etc.

I probably wasn't even a thought in my parent's heads when shows like Open All Hours, On the Buses, Dad's Army, Porridge and other shows were originally broadcast but they've all become favorites of mine after catching the odd episode on a Sunday evening with my Dad.
The original Japanese Godzilla movies were been made before either of my parents were born, but thanks to reading an encyclopedia on Monsters and watching AMV's on YouTube of the 1998 remake and its animated series, I came across the original Godzilla and became a fan; especially after what he does to his American counterpart here:

Finally when I was a kid, I used to watch Beast Wars - which was a sequel series to the original 80's Transformers TV show featuring a group of descendants of the Autobots and Decepticons (Maximals and Predacons) ending up on Earth millions of years in the past after the Maximals pursued the Predacons through time to recover a stolen relic (the series is set after the Ark crash-landed on Earth in the first episode of the original series but millions of years before the Autobots/Decepticons woke up, while it's also established that the Autobots won the 'Great War' against the Decepticons).
Battle soon erupts between both sides - the Maximals led by Optimus Primal and the Predacons led by a leader who has named himself 'Megatron' after the original Decepticon leader - over the planet's vast reserves of the fuel source Energon (both sides taking on Beast forms to protect themselves from the abundant Energon radiation).
However, it's revealed that the stolen relic is in fact the Golden Disk from the Voyager Space Probe - which the original Megatron found and encoded a secret message and instructions for any Decepticon descendants to find and follow should he fail to win the Great War. As such, the war shifts to trying to stop the Predacons from changing history.

The show - despite been made in the 90's - had a lot of references to the original show; referencing the Great War and its outcome, bringing back Starscream's ghost briefly in Season 1 and bringing back G1 Ravage as a Predacon in Season 2, having Predacon Megatron try to assassinate Optimus Prime - with Optimus Primal having to save his ancestor, Predacon Megatron stealing the spark of his Decepticon namesake to become more powerful and even bringing back the Nemesis Warship used by the Decepticons in the first episode of the original 80s series.
As a kid, I didn't know most of these references, but thanks to this and later some help from Transformers Armada, I found the original show and enjoyed watching the old episodes and its movie.
