Defying dyslexia and autism

SUFFERING from both autism and dyslexia can be a barrier for some ? but not Sam Wilson.

The 19-year-old West Notts College student gained a D in history and environmental science and an E in biology.

This wasn't enough to get into his first choice at Nottingham Trent University but he has secured a place on a zoology degree at the University of Derby.

He said: "I feel fantastic and hopefully I'm going to visit the university tomorrow."

Mum Annette said: "I'm so pleased we have a happy outcome as this mattered a lot to Sam.

"He's worked so hard and he's very capable of studying at the next level."

A TEENAGER with autism has been inspired to pursue a career in teaching - by the school staff who helped him to achieve exam success.

Daniel Gilpin, who has Asperger’s Syndrome, beamed from ear to ear after picking up his GCSE results from All Saints Catholic High School, Granville Road, Sheffield.

The 16-year-old scooped one A*, four As, and four Bs, securing his place at sixth form.

He excitedly clutched his envelope as he called his mother to tell her the good news.

Daniel, of Southey Green, said: “I was stunned. I’m still shaking. My mum is very, very pleased.

“I got an A* in Biology which is great because I am going to take that at A Level.

“I was really worried about English Literature but I got an A in that too.

“I was diagnosed with Asperger’s when I was seven and I got told I had it when I was nine. I was confused about what it meant at first. I learn in a very different way to other people and I have had to adapt over the years.

“I’ve got quite a collective memory so I like looking through books and remembering where things are. Experience helps and the school have supported me too.

“I’d say the teachers here have inspired me to become a teacher myself.”

The results mean he is one step closer to realise his dream of becoming a teacher of geography - one of his favourite subjects.

Keen on doing his bit for the environment, he promoted the school’s recycling programme and would wake up extra-early to carry out litter picks outside.

He said: “I’d be up at 7am picking up cans and bottles.”

All Saints headteacher Bob Sawyer praised Daniel and said: “Daniel is a great example of someone who has really performed right to the edge of their potential.”
