Did something stupid and now unemployed

Mattymatt

Imperfectly Perfect
While working to load an airplane yesterday, I had a clumsy moment and accidentally hit an aircraft with the belt loader. I thought I had the wheels chocked and it slipped forward and damaged the plane. Since I am only a probationary employee, I was let go. When they broke the news to me, I decided to be magnanimous and just admitted that I had done wrong and I understand that they had to let me go. I thanked them for the opportunity and assured them that there was nothing personal and I understand that it had to get done. The manager actually said, "Wow, I wish there were people as mature as you. If it were in my power not to terminate your employment, I would have done so. These rules were created by senior human resource management." She even said that I could use her as a reference. I made lemonade out of lemons I guess. This puts the permanent kibosh on being a pilot and that's okay - it's just time to keep moving forward.

So, it's back to beating the bushes for employment. For the first time in my life, I am not going to play the victim and say woe is me. I've come too far in conquering the depression that has plagued the last 4 years of my life to let this little bump in the road get me down. I am going to beat the bushes for employment and maybe take advantage of the WIA (Workforce Investment Act) to update my IT certifications. While I do this, I am going to turn to my old standby of security work.

Wow! So sorry to hear that Matt - I know how much getting this job meant to you. Kudos to you for taking it so well and for your determination not to let it get you down.
HUGE respect to you mate!

Thanks guys! I appreciate the support. I just applied to another job this evening for a healthcare security officer. I think this would be a good role for me because I am a nice guy and I am very understanding.

Here's your chance! This time pick a career that you are really good at AND would really like to do. Choose wisely because you don't want to have to go through that again and human resource managers are definitely NOT nice nor understanding.

Good luck with your job hunting you have a great attitude and will soon be snapped up by an employer! In a good way I mean. :)

Man, that blows, but I've been there myself. I was fired a couple days after I hired on for a trucking job years ago when I knocked the passenger mirror off my truck . . . twice. I know you'll do well and will find something even better. While you browse Indeed and the other job sites, enjoy your mini vacation.:)
I tend to be visually spatially clumsy. I've overcome the worst of it but I'll never completely get over it. Maneuvering everything in tight, careful spaces will always be personally challenging.

You handled that so well! It seems you are going in a very good direction. Even though you lost the job, you seem to be in a better place and moving forward. I hope you keep doing that :-)

To bad to hear you lost your job. Still don't give up, go for the next job and strive to do even better at your next job. Good luck.

I'm so sorry to hear about that! I remember you posting how excited you were about this job. I truly hope things work out for you! I've been there as well.
