Discerning the Bible

I'll say this about your question, and it will likely be the last thing I say. Bible verses are not meant to be read out of context and parsed as individual statements, because they aren't.

If I said, "tell me the meaning of the 9th line of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner"... you wouldn't be able to do so with accuracy without the context, not just of the text of the rest of the verse but the entirety of the poem.

Iron maiden - The Rime of an Ancient Mariner, a 12 minute masterpiece

Thank you sportster. I feel that it may have a meaning that could be interpreted as physical, spiritual and intellectually. I think it says that God, if need be, will fight our battles. but that some battles we have to fight and or handle ourselves. But that God will be with us all the way.

Not only has the verse got a context but we have our own context as Auties.

I would say that the author is saying "thank you for the abilities you gave me". There are many layers of interpretation that are possible with this verse. It is poetry after all.

This verse was used in the film Zulu to great effect IIRC. .

Thank you. Can you or someone give me the gist of things in John 15 ?

This may sound stupid, but what is context! And how does one get it? Can one only read things in its entirety all the time? Or can one not get the gist through skimming and scanning? I read the entire 23 psalms probably 50 plus times, what is it that I should get from it?

Just trying to educate myself with the Bible then if I can figure this out I may move onto other readings

Context =
1.
the parts of a written or spoken statement that precede or follow a specific word or passage, usually influencing its meaning or effect:
You have misinterpreted my remark because you took it out of context.
2.
the set of circumstances or facts that surround a particular event, situation, etc.
==============
I think starting at the beginning would be a good idea.
Genesis.

My first attempts at reading the Bible, I tried Psalms.
Didn't make much, if any, sense to me.
I read Job because it is featured in the Bible as Literature classes.

The anthology of material which is called the Bible didn't
begin to make sense to me until I started at the beginning
and read through. Out loud.

Ok thank you very much, I started at psalms, then the Gospels, then the New testament. I am up to revelations. All I know is that regardless, if true or not. In which, I believe to be true and have been baptized by the water and in the spirit. What is discernment and does it come in handy for other readings.

Baptized by "water and in the spirit">
What do you mean by that?

Do you mean water baptism and receiving
the gift of the Holy Spirit as evidenced by
speaking in tongues?

Or what?

Is there no church group you can attend?

If they don't accept you, then
obviously that's not the right group.

When I was looking for a church,
it took awhile. I called around
and asked questions.

Thanks for the link. It say that the Bible is a collection of books like a liabrary.

Its books are “shelved” by type and topic, just as in a public library: history, the Law, the Prophets, poems and wisdom literature, eyewitness accounts of Jesus (the Gospels), collections of letters, and mind-blowing apocalyptic descriptions of the past, present and future. What a treasure trove to explore!

I read from that link that judeo Christian and Islamic world view are based on the old testament genesis and exodus.

I feel Jesus is both the husbandman and the vine, and that we are branches. And that branches that bear good fruit are purged and bear more fruit. And that we are clean through God's word.He abides in us, as we him. With out God we can do nothing. If one does not abide in him then they are bad fruit and will be cast away into hell. Keep his Commandments and abide in him and he will love you.

This is my gist . Is there a shorter way or more accurate way to describe it?

How do preachers memorize verses?

That's great. It is a metaphor based of viticulture (I'm a bible geek as a special interest and a horticulturalist by profession.

Jesus is talking about grafting. This is when you take part of one plant and fuse it with another so that it grows on a root stock. Often a cultivated fruit variety is less vigorous than the original species so if you want it to do well you graft onto the more vigorous root stock so it is fed and nourished and grows better.
I think the passage is more focussed on the positive than the negative. It is focussed on abiding- being at one with Jesus. He loves us anyway- he warns us about being apart because we won't thrive or grow as well.

The pruning is discipline/ correction not judgement. He will do things that might seem unpleasant at the time to correct us, but always with our log term growth and fruitfulness as its aim. Personally I think that hell is a bit of an extreme interpretation in this case.

This is one of the 7 Great "I am" statements that he gospel of John is based around. You might want to look the others up: https://www.esv.org/resources/esv-global-study-bible/chart_43_08/

So what have you learned from reading this passage does it mean to you? Have you taken any encouragement from it?
