Does anyone here speak Esperanto?

I've been studying a bit of Esperanto over the past few years. At Esperanto events I've noticed a number of possible Aspies. I think that it's a good way to meet people both online and offline.

I've been getting interested in it again, and I thought I would see if anyone here on AC speaks it or would like to speak it.

If you aren't familiar with Esperanto, it's a constructed language that was designed to make it easy for people from around the world to communicate with each other. Ambitious learners can start having conversations in just a few weeks or months. There is a documentary about it over here:

The Universal Language (excerpt 1):

Learning Esperanto also helps speed up the learning of additional languages. See: Propaedeutic value of Esperanto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There are as many as a couple of million speakers scattered around the world, and it's easy to find Esperantists to communicate with online.

There's also a nice video of interviews with native Esperanto speakers... you can turn on subtitles if they don't automatically appear.

I would like to learn! Thanks for the links. Maybe over the summer...

I heard a good interview in which Daniel Tammet was talking about language learning, including Esperanto. If I can find an online link I will post it.

I haven't been acquainted with Esperanto, but I have heard of Lojban the "logical language". I wouldn't be surprised to find a plethora of Aspies in either.

A good place start is Lernu.net. If you have questions, let me know. :)

I would like to learn some Lojban, but I think that there are very few speakers. It would be a good language to speak with someone when you don't want anyone to understanding what you are saying.

Here's the episode

Thanks, I will watch it today. Esperanto sometimes turns up in popular culture.

The Simpsons:

A horror movie starring William Shatner, fully in Esperanto:

Final Fantasy XI -- title (Memoro de la Ŝtono) and lyrics:

Yes, I speak Esperanto a lot and it is much easier to get accepted in the Esperanto community. Usually the fact that you can speak Esperanto is enough for people to want to be friends with you. Soon (maybe next month) it will be possible to learn Esperanto at the Duolingo website. Very nice free website to learn languages. If you already speak Esperanto there is a nice video on Youtube about Aspergers and women.

I don't know any foreign languages, but my husband can speak Klingon pretty well. I'm not exactly sure how to feel about that. ;-)

Give Esperanto a try. You could be communicating in a second language in just a few weeks. :)

If anyone wants to do a 6 week Esperanto learning challenge, let me know. It has been done before:
Lauren’s 6-week mission to learn Esperanto | Esperanto Language Blog
https://www.google.com/search?q=esperanto+in+6+weeks&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

I can hold conversations in the language but am not entirely fluent. I'm working on it at the moment.

Do you know of any places where people can do 6 week learning challenges with others for different languages? I've always wanted to learn Italian but they never offered it at a school I went to. My options were Spanish and Latin. I took one semester of Latin and don't remember a bit of it.

Vi jam scias kiam uzi la akuzativon. :)

You already know when to use the accusative case. All you need is a bit of vocabulary and then you can communicate with it...

Actually I cheated, all I know is how to visit Google Translate and copy/paste the result.

It still sounds like fun though.

JES! Mi parolas la Esperanton.
I started learning Esperanto because I wanted to talk with my best friend about, whatever, without being noticed. I learned at duolingo.com. I love Esperanto, it is a way to meet people from other countries in an interesting way. It makes you part of a group, and that's cool for me. Perhaps we can talk later, when I practice a bit more. We can even attend to an Esperanto reunion together!
Hey, by the way, it is important for you to see this video:

I'm a bit conflicted about Esperanto. I've spent some time learning it in the past, although I don't remember very much of it at the moment. I don't think it's a very good conlang, I don't think it will every become a universal language, and I personally am pretty bored with Indo-European languages. However, it is an easy language to learn, there is large and interesting community around it, and it does feel kind of like an exciting secret to speak it in public. I do love Duolingo; perhaps I shall continue my Esperanto studies there.
