Dream Vacation Thread

I dream of coming up for a cure for alcoholism so I can visit Oktoberfest in Munich and indulge without problems.

I also dream of becoming fluent in speaking Japanese and spending money in the Akiba district.

But seriously, my dream vacation would be a sunny beach with an ice cold drink in one hand and a novel in the other, then I come back home with a tan after a few days of that.

What is your dream vacation?

My dream vacation would involve diving, staying in a resort with access to good food and where there are excellent shore-diving sites. Captain Don's, or Buddy Dive on Bonaire are good. A month should get me on Island Time.
OR
A trip to Oz and the Ediacaran Hills, to see the first indication of complex life on earth, 635 million years ago. Our ancestor among them. And then some diving on the Great Barrier Reef. Then maybe going to Shark Bay to see modern Stromatolites, the fossils of which I have seen near the summits of mountains in Glacier National Park!

Just a fully stocked cabin in the middle of a forest or near a mountain lake or other body of water, preferably far from civilization. Listening to nothing but sounds of nature and where there are good hikes and wildlife viewing

To drive the Dempster Highway in Yukon Territories (northern Canada), and to see the Arctic Ocean... Home | dempsterhighway

Along the way of course drive the Alaska Highway... And possibly drive down the Stewart-Cassiar Highway, another northern driving route, I have always wanted to visit Stewart, BC... Stewart Cassiar Highway | Northern BC

I have always had a fascination with northern Canada, I have made it as far about Mile 50 on the Alaska Highway, and that was it...

Secretly I wish I had driven the far north in the "bad old days" when most routes were gravel, with of course a truck that would have been up to the challenge, those days are gone now, although the Dempster Highway is still gravel and that probably won't change...

First I would spend a week in my vacation home in Monaco. (I don't have one, but I want one). Just laying around in the sun on the fancy riviera and drinking fancy drinks and eating fancy sea food.

Then I would go to Missouri and hang out there for a while. And then I would rent a car and drive across the US and back, just looking at Americans and enjoying the scenery. :) Visit all the tourist attractions. That's a month of great vacation.
Why Missouri? Granted a lot of American History flowed through that state. I would start at that "City of Big Shoulders, hog butcher to the world," Chicago. Not only a vibrant place, but many transportation routes West, flow through Chicago. Like Gypsy Jazz? Go to The Green Mill on Wed. where Alfonso Ponticelli and Swing Gitane play. It used to be a favorite of Al Capone where he had his own booth. The most fabulous public parks on a waterfront of any city, and great architecture. And in the summer the Chicago Symphony plays at the outdoor venue of Ravinia.(little beats hearing symphonic compositions while picknicing on the lawn listening to the CSO).

Then you have choices. Trace the historic Route 66 to Los Angeles, take I-80 to San Francisco going through a cross section of American geology, or consider the Northern route of I-94 to Billings, Montana, where it merges with I-90 that takes the Southerly route past The Corn Palace, Badlands National Park, Wall Drugs, Mount Rushmore and routes off the interstate to places like, The Ashfall Site, Devil's Tower (Close Encounters), and Yellowstone via Cody with a fabulous Buffalo Bill museum, and after the merge at Billings, barrels on to Seattle. All going out of Chicago. Americana all the way.

I would love to go back to England and Finland. I really liked these places. But l was going to go to Singapore. I still want to go. I love Chinese food.

This is a really interesting thread for me since I’m a travel fanatic lol and a fairly accomplished one. I have several:

- Scandinavia

- Faroe Islands

- Iceland

- Germany

- Netherlands

- Poland

- Portugal

- Spain

- Italy

- Greece

- Romania

- UK countryside

- Thailand

- Australia

- New Zealand

- Maldives

- Caribbean

- South Africa

- Morocco

- Costa Rica

- All of Canada

- Mountains of West Virginia

- Savannah, Georgia

- Outer Banks

- Alaska

- Ozarks (Arkansas)

- Montana

- Pacific Northwest

- Great Lakes

- North Woods of Maine, and White Mountains of New Hampshire, and Vermont

- I want to go back to Hawaii for a permanent vacation lol

…I have already been to some of these places but they are still my dream vacation spots and I want to go back.

I may have missed some but these are the ones that initially came to mind.

Most boring answer of all: none, I'm really happy just living life where I'm at.

But if I had to have a cooler answer, I'd definitely want to stay at a 'haunted' location, do some urbex where trespassing laws aren't too harsh, or conduct a days-long ghost hunt. Regular vacations can eat my shorts

Would like to see you enjoy the freshwater seas of the Great Lakes. There are a couple of National Lakeshores, lots of beaches and the raw beauty of Lake Superior. Bring a bike. Good bike trails are a thing in the Great Lakes States. The granddaddy of them all is the Sparta-Elroy bike trail that goes through three old railway tunnels. Then there is a real nice small city, Traverse City and nearby for a lot to do. Many wineries, a meadery, lots of fresh or smoked fish, fresh fruit with farmstands in the countryside, and the best tart cherries in America.

And wow! I'm least a little envious, my world travels don't even begin to compare... But then I still like my prairies as well, even if it's not a long way from home...

Many wineries, a meadery, lots of fresh or smoked fish, fresh fruit with farmstands in the countryside, and the best tart cherries in America. Cross the mighty Mackinack (mak - in - naw) bridge to the Upper Peninsula and you find the second largest waterfall East of the Mississippi and the Pictured Rocks.

I haven’t been to every single one of those locations lol, I have been to a lot but some of them are ones that I hope to visit, or are wishful thinking :)

I would love to visit Calgary though! I love Canada in general, and I’m a big fan of prairies. Your photos make it look really beautiful there.

And I live in a pretty desolate area too, like how you describe Calgary. I think I would definitely still enjoy it.

What are some must-see natural locations there? (Preferably not touristy)

There is a daunting beauty to the prairies. I have enjoyed things like the tallgrass prairies of Illinois to the vast sweep of land across Western Minnesota, the Dakotas, Montana, Nebraska, and Wyoming. I saw some of your great Northern prairie when I traveled East from Drumheller for a bit. I couldn't believe your tales of dry rain until I experienced it myself.

Lots of places, depending on what enjoy, within Calgary... Harvie Passage, Nose Hill Park, Inglewood Wildlands, St Patrick's Island, downtown of course :p

One other thing I would love to is spend as much time as possible (one month?) just driving all over the prairies and exploring

I also would like to go back to NYC and fully explore the various museums instead of being rushed through by my lover at the time - he just was not as into that kind of thing as I was.

I also want a solo DisneyWorld trip where I have a lot of cash and a lot of time saved for the purpose and no company to dictate where I will go to.

And a trip to visit the major cities in Europe, seeing as my first real vacation there was ruined by a younger sister who was withdrawing from meth and who made it perfectly clear all she wanted to do was watch TV when we were there.

First of all, having plenty of money, plenty free time, buying or hiring a campervan and then heading up north through the Balkans and then Europe. I would stop wherever I want, spend as much time there as I like, go where I like. Then go further afield - the Americas, India, Australia, safe areas of Asia and Africa. I'd probably need a couple of years to do all that. Oh, and I'd want to visit Iceland.

@Forest Cat I was wondering also why you picked Missouri.
I lived there for 15 years, and I would like to go back and visit the old familiar
places. Parts of it are truly beautiful.

I live in Florida now, and I would start my tour of America with a camper van.
Up the east coast mountain roads and see Washington DC then I would head west
to St. Louis and back down to the Ozarks.
From there I would continue west and re-visit the deserts. I was born in Arizona.
Take Highway 1 up the west coast to Portland and work my way back to Florida
through areas I haven't seen.

Second excursion would be a cruise to the Yucatan to see the beaches there and
the pyramid tour.
I'd like to cruise the Mediterranean and experience all the little ports.

And the topper would be to see New Zealand and Peru.
If I could pick only one place to see it would be Machu Pichu.

This is Alley Springs, MO
My Dad purposed to Mom here. I visited most every weekend and rented a
horse to go along the river this flows into.

I’d really like to go to NYC alone someday. My first time there I went by myself, but it was only a day trip, so I couldn’t fit much in. I’ve since been back several times, but I’ve always had traveling companions, so I’ve had to take their wants into consideration. Alone, I’d do exactly what I wanted, eat where I wanted, see the museums I wanted, go for the walks I wanted, etc. I think it’d be a lot of fun.
