who here has or had a problem with excess saliva production/lack of saliva control [aka drooling]? if you are embarrassed, just fill in the poll, please. :)

I drool in my sleep, and I sometimes salivate when I think about food. I know that’s really gross and weird but I have trouble controlling it

^^^Crew, do you think this is a comorbid of being on the spectrum?
I actually have no idea. Until now, I thought I was the only person on here that this happens to.
It would be interesting to read more replies!

Not so much on the drooling spectrum-- but when I yawn, oftentimes a jet of saliva shoots out from under my tongue! Yecch.
My dentist has to have a suction drain in my mouth while he works otherwise the werk will get drowned.

My brother did as a kid. I do when I smoke. Thankfully it's never phlegmy (tmi).

I do have to remember to keep my mouth firmly closed when I lay on my side in bed etc. Otherwise it ends up on the pillow, and I find saliva quite an unnerving substance.

how does one explain him or herself if one drools in front of people who notice and are grossed out by it?

I had a cat that would drool. Some kind of Pavlovian reaction...

Just tell them, you're only human, and you can't help it if your glands are hyperactive. Tell them, it's a medical condition. That should get sympathy.

that is a cat that was weaned too soon from its mother. and i tell people i have a medical condition and they keep a wide berth around me.

Tell them it's non contagious. Tell them you were weaned too soon from your mother. Tell them, Hell...I don't know...Tell them nothing. You don't have to explain yourself to nobody if you don't want to.

Johnny Carson, multiple failed marriages. I think, a heavy drinker also. Reportedly, those that knew him considered him, aloof and distant, even cold. Apparently he had psychological issues. Despite being beloved by millions of Americans, and very successful financially, it obviously wasn't enough, that cheery upbeat lighthearted facade on camera was just a pretense, he was a dark, brooding, serious and very private person.

Some people spend their entire life trying to impress their parents. Many workaholic type-A personalities have these impulses developed in them through childhood conditioning. Most often it's a strict, cold, highly critical and impersonal parent, who demands high achievement in exchange for praise and love, or what passes for love.
They get the idea, deeply rooted in their subconscious, that they have no worth unless they get good grades, get good job, are successful etc. (In Johnny's case he had his own media empire.)
It might explain Johnny Carson, despite having all the material success and accolades you could want out of life, the fast cars, the beautiful model wife's, the fat bank account, the mansions, the fame, was still unhappy, maybe even felt empty inside. Worthless. This would naturally result in a cold harsh demeanor when dealing with others. If the stories about him are any indication, his TV persona, and the real 'JC', were night and day opposites.

Now, lets get back to spit. I seem to be drifting off-topic.

If I have seen a little further it is only by standing on the shoulders of Giants.

They're all dead, mostly. But their wisdom is passed down through the ages. Preserved in those wonderful things called books. But of course, Real life experience, human interaction and observation, can be the greatest teacher of them all.
