Disclaimer: I am a recovering drug addict and I am biased about the use of drugs because I believe that many people, like myself, will not ever be able to use them appropriately or “as prescribed.“ I realize this is not the case for everybody.
I know that the idea of microdosing psilocybin is a new hot topic of discussion. I've never microdosed psilocybin but I question what exactly "microdosing" means in relation to psilocybin. Does it mean taking an amount so low that the person can't actually feel any intoxicating effects at all but the substance is allegedly giving a therapeutic effect? If that's the case and it actually helped with anxiety or depression I could see it might be efficacious.
However, if "microdosing" psilocybin means the person feels mildly "trippy", even just a little all day every day, I personally would consider such a feeling to be a form of hell on earth. …
I realize you're talking about microdosing, but again, what exactly does that mean in relation to psilocybin?
For a therapeutic effect, it is definitely meant to be the former, where you take so little that you don’t actually feel any noticeable effect at all. Somewhat like an antidepressant, where the work is happening in the background over the long term.
It quickly becomes a slippery slope, however, because it is so new as an idea for treating different types of symptoms by a healthcare professional.
As it is currently used for “microdosing,” however it seems like it is mostly people experimenting with their own stash and taking tiny doses, but that is such a slippery slope and it ends up meaning something different to everybody. Many people are doing what you described where you feel a small trippy effect and calling that microdosing, when really that is just an excuse to day trip in my opinion.
Please share any thoughts you have!
I am also curious if anyone has experience with microdosing psilocybin, in regards to treating severe depression & anxiety.
One of the current modes of using psychedelics to treat depression and anxiety does not involve a microdose, and it does involve a qualified health professional with whom you spend your entire trip. After lead up counseling, you will take the drug in the presence of the therapist and they will remain with you and process things as you trip until it is over.
I have not been through this, and the idea of spending an entire trip (which can last 6 to 8 hours, plus the residual effects) with a health professional sounds excruciating to me.
Otherwise, recreationally, it’s definitely an interesting experience. it would be important to be in a safe place with people that you trust, or if you are experienced, possibly by yourself.
One of the things to consider is that people have widely varied experiences with hallucinogenic drugs. If you already have a high tolerance for being on drugs, that may make you more able to have a happy trip. But, especially with our different brain chemistries, it can be a unique experience for everyone.
As far as weed? Most people can handle it, but for any real drug addicts out there, “weed maintenance” is still drugs. The concentrations in which you can currently buy different forms of weed is so high that it can act like real drugs. Only the absence of weed gives you a truly clear brain, no matter how minor the effect seems to be. It suppresses dreams, changes your senses, and can allure the addict just as something stronger can.
