Experiences While On Dental Anesthesia

Riley

Well-Known Member
On the 2nd of next month, I will be going in for a root canal. Obviously, I'm not overly excited about this. But I WILL be given Valium and that numbing/laughing gas. I kind of hope I'll pass out on my own. Anywho:

  • Can anyone here share their experiences at the dentist while on those listed medicines? Should I be nervous?

Valium....I had that when I got 4 impacted wisdom teeth
removed. It didn't make me high. It is just a tranquilizer.

I was awake for the procedure.
I didn't have nitrous oxide.

So...Will Valium be a good thing? I've never had tranquilizer?

It was a very mild experience to me.
I felt no anxiety regarding what the surgeon was doing.

It didn't put me to sleep or make me weird.

You won't likely pass out. It's the local anesthesia (lidocaine?) that actually addresses the pain. Administered with a hypodermic. The rest is for anxiety.

Chances are once all the sedatives are in play your body will relax in a way you may not be used to. It's the nitrus oxide that you may find "fun". ;)

Usually when it begins to take it forces me to grin. It's a funny experience, but helps take your mind off what's happening in your mouth. Once all these things are working, nervous is the one thing you probably won't be at all.

You'll be fine. Bon voyage! :p

I'm very afraid of dentists. I try to avoid them. I have literally run out of room 203 at Summa Hospital in Akron away from a dentist. I was given Valium before I went to the dentist so I wouldn't run out. I'm missing three teeth because I refused to go to the dentist.

I've had root canals Riley, and was anesthetized. Could see and hear and smell and talk during the procedure, but it was like I was watching a movie, noticing things but feeling nothing and I was not at all affected. After it was over, I slept for a short while in a room beside the surgery. Then someone came to pick me up, and I went home.

I hate dentists, because I hate the concentration of my face and I get soooo scared. One dentist actually played music and that was so calming to me.

I have to have a broken tooth removed in a couple of week's time. About two year's ago, I had a tooth removed ( had 4 altogether, due to acid erosion) and he did a bad job and so, broken pieces are stuck in the hole, which has never had a chance to heal.

The surgeon very kindly warned me that I have to be courageous, which of course, caused panic immediately.

If I do not have it properly removed, then I will just get abscesses.

I am going through local anesthesia, but all that does is numb the area and so, have to deal with them pushing and prodding and it is not very pleasant.

I've had a root canal. Only had lidocaine, and it was no worse than a filling. I don't like the dentist, but I used to have a huge phobia that led me to not go for nearly a decade. That led to me needing a lot of fillings, a root canal and loosing a wisdom tooth. So yeah, I'm better at going now.

im on vallium [lorazepam] as a up to twice daily medication [although more often than not i just have it at night] and even when i first went on it years ago,it did very little for my anxiety, but my shrink insists i stay on it.

i have a special needs dentist for people with intellectual disability and originally;many years ago they tried sedating me with midazolam for general work because of my challenging behavior which worked for the first few sessions but i began becoming aware of my surroundings and remembering it and i almost stopped breathing so they use general anaesthetic for any dental work for me.

i recommend midazolam over vallium any time,it feels like a general anaesthetic you come around from it as if youve woken up,as midazolam stops new memories from forming and sedates you,so while you are aware of having any work done, your brain instantly forgets it,if you have it regulary though you can get used to it and remember parts that you dont want to.

Same here! Took courage on my part to go.
