Hello All,
This is my very first blog posting, so bear with me. I am a future female scientist with Asperger's Syndrome. I was home-schooled, and started college when I was 16 years old. Many people like to judge me and assume I am not intelligent due to my social awkwardness. Some also like to judge me because they assume a female cannot do well with math and science.
In the title of this piece, I state that I face discrimination. I realize that "discrimination" may be too large of a word for what I face. I am not being raped, shot, or stoned to death because I want to attend school as many women are in the Middle East. I am not oppressed. I simply face some insults from others for being a Hispanic female scientist with Asperger's Syndrome.
Anyway, I would like to keep this first posting fairly short. One goal of mine is to encourage women to pursue their passions, regardless of what society tells them they can and cannot do. Studies have shown that women are just as good as men in math and science. We are not inherently inferior. Many women struggle in math and science because they are told that they SHOULD struggle. Well, there are many studies that prove that our mental capabilities are no less than that of men. I was never told that I could be just as good or better than a man in math and science. I researched the topic on my own and found out for myself. I encourage all of the men and women reading this post to self-educate and question everything. Do not take my word for it. Go out and research everything you read on your own, using reliable sources (ie. not Fox News).
I will continue to update this page. You can expect me to write about Autism Spectrum Disorder, homeschooling, women in science, and other topics commonly ignored by the media and our school systems.
Enjoy,
Gabi Alexadra
