First car

Straight to the point, since I always look ahead I'm somewhat planning what car to get once I've passed my test (Prolly in a months or so time) and have a budget of around £2500 for a used car. Obviously I want something small (Hatchback me thinks) which has a decent mpg and won't randonly break down in the middle of the M1.

Currently top of my list is a VW Golf TDi/GTi which are around £2200 but was wondering if there's any other suggestions? NOT an old banger please, something which does the job but not so bad it'd make me embarassed to drive it. :)

Thanks.

That was my first car I'm afraid.

When I was in the UK I found that anything with a bit of go attracted astronomical insurance premiums. I was 33 years old at the time. I was looking at spending only a couple of thousand quid... and insurance premiums were near a thousand quid.

So Mike is right. Check out what sort of insurance you will be up for before you go making plans to buy something like a Golf GTI.

Yea, he's correct, also it's best to compare at gocompare.com or compare the meekat, they compare the prices of car insurances and it would of been alot easier and it might actually help you save money as I've heard some good reviews about it, but you will need license and it comes with Tax too, it's alot of things you have to do with a car here in London, maybe it might be slightly different where you are.

Hopefully this is helpful enough for you. :)

what i plan to do when i get my first car (hopefully start of next year) is just get a cheap car (wont matter if it gets scratched etc also cheap insurance) in good condition, as far as mpg goes, its all about how you drive it

have a look on autotrader, local second hand garages etc

The insurance isn't actually TOO bad, it's more than let's say a crap version of a Golf but only around 15-20% more. Depends on the specific car however.

By the time I get one I'll easily be getting enough income to cover repairs, MOT, insurance, tax, petrol and so on so yesh I've taken everything into account. :P

Insurance is gonna bum you on anything really. :( :P

I like my 1.8d 1999 fiesta tbh. :) Great on fuel.

i just did some online insurance quotes on my mums daewoo matiz (korean pile of cheap ****) (group 1 or 2 insurance and excellent mpg thanks to a 800cc engine) and the cheapest i got was £1954.32, 3rd party fire and theft, £200 voluntary excess, and i live in a good area

@chris 1.8ld isnt that a bit excessive for a small car like that

oh, also another plus to going for a cheaper car is to build a no claims bonus, another good thing to go for is pass plus or an iam member to get cheaper insurance

My first car was my brother's car - a Dodge Aries K in silver with burgundy interior. I still remember how the felt top inside came loose and was almost coming down on my head! Good times.

Mine was a 1984 Cavalier wagon. I loved it.

Kinda hard to say "don't get a foreign car" because the OP is in England. But I'd look for something that can be readily fixed if needed for not a ton of money, and is well known by mechanics in your area. You wouldn't want to get something that only specialized dealers know how to work on, and has parts that are special order and cost a fortune. Then when it breaks down you are screwed. I've seen so many people fall into this trap because they buy a car that looks pretty or whatever.

Avoid French cars if possible! Their wiring is awful, they're frequently prone to leaks, and parts seem to randomly fall off for no apparent reason. Speaking from experience with both a Renault and a Peugeot.

My current/official own first car is a 1996 BMW 316i which is cheap to buy and reasonable to insure, but not so cheap for major part replacement if anything did go wrong.

Have to say Corsas aren't too bad! Reasonable MPG (though not the best out there) and easy to source parts for.

A 74 MG Midget. This is close to what mine looked like...although mine was a lefthand drive:

My third and first car.

The top is my current car before I repainted it. The bottom one was my mums before she gave it to me it was just a plain white Honda city turbo 2
