First winter day

At least in Alberta, the snow is on the ground and the temperatures are getting lower... I went for a walk today, the day after the snow happened, a mere -10 Celsius, you just have to dress for it, the walk was quite enjoyable...

Two friends of mine, an outside coffee break, since no smoking inside, and my version of a portrait...

First soft frost on the windshield yesterday morning. The deer are as fat as they’ll get this year and the turkeys are gathering at my elevation, biggest flocks I’ve ever seen, passing across the yard leaving the annual lawn fertilizer. My knees hurt. I love watching the grandkids at Christmas and they still insist I play with them; pretty sure I can pull it off. Power bills will eat up my gasoline budget, but I haven’t felt much like traveling. Almost time to put on the studded tires. One more time.

Great photos. Friends On Break is a riveting study.

I know them well enough, and a standard head shot portrait wouldn't work for me, this is the kind of thing I look for all the time... I had asked first...
I see what you mean. Still, either of those faces supports a second look. Maybe it’s the cold, but up against the rich urban detail, it’s worthy of a spot on the wall.

Those are nice photos
That looks really fun, I love the look of snow but get cold fast
But sometimes I wish it would snow like that here because it is so beautiful

This was January 2019 when I first met Liam at the same coffee shop, via the camera lens... We have since become friends, I've only met his partner Marzena a couple times... Liam is an artist if you haven't figured that out yet...

Winter can be beautiful, but also comes with rather cold temperatures sometimes... Today was -10 Celsius, some days in winter are -30 or colder...

This week we finally get a taste of fall. High in the upper 60s. This usually happens the week before Halloween. A week ago it was in the mid-90s.

Saturday it cooled to the mid 80s and I went on a little hike. Met a friend along the way.

Do you ever get snow?

Maybe every 3 or 4 years, we'll get a bit of snow. Every couple of decades, it will stick to the ground for a few hours. This is much less common than in the past, as it is warmer here than it used to be. Last winter a nighttime temperature in the 30s F was quite unusual. I have hopes for this winter. At least one meteorologist is predicting cold storms and frost warnings this year. OTOH, that sucks for the farmers.

If it happens, it is in Jan. or Feb. One time, when I was subbing in a class, it started to snow, and the entire school stopped classes right then to let the kids out in the playground to see it.

If I am willing to drive into the mountains, I can reliably get above the winter snow line. There are even ski resorts; places like Wrightwood and Arrowhead. We're at about 1400 ft. elevation here. Temps drop by 3.5-5 degrees F for every thousand feet of elevation, and we have local mountains in the 8000 ft range.

I like seeing snow pictures, and I like to visit places with snow. I really like the photo of the river and bridge.

We rarely get snow here. We're at sea level, close to the Gulf of Mexico, and this is considered subtropical. A cold front is supposed to move in here next Tuesday, maybe bring some rain which we desperately need, and temperature down to 38 degrees F. We are 12 inches behind on rainfall for the year, a statewide burn-ban is in place, and many plants and trees have died from the drought. I seem to have spent much of the summer dragging 200-foot hoses around the yard to keep the blueberries, figs, apple trees and other things alive. Very unusual for us.

Snow arrived here, northeast of you, yesterday, and has continued today. The ground already had 2 or 3 cm of frost, so no melting is expected until April. I had been working on my car all summer, and beat the freezing weather by hours to finish the main part of the job. I think I can finish up without freezing my fingers, with frequent breaks. Having the snow arrive has really thrown me off. I had a race to get the yard ready for it, and am still resting up from that. Usually, I'd relax, but this year I am still finishing summer jobs and too aware of other chores I had to put off.
