Local man, Daniel Hughes (20) from North Tolsta recently organised a football match to fundraise for Scottish Autism managing to reach a total amount of £1,310.

Daniel and his family have known that his younger brother (7) has autism since he was a toddler.

Daniel said; “My wee brother is the most fantastic boy anyone could meet, but I wanted to do something to help and show my support to Scottish Autism.

“I know first hand how difficult daily life can be for individuals and families affected by autism - doing simple things can be a challenge - so if the money raised can help the charity reach more people in Scotland with the condition I will be delighted!”

Daniel, who has just returned from England where he was also involved in fundraising, organised 34 men to focus on sponsorship and had two teams playing on the day with ‘Team Daniel’ winning a convincing 8-3 over ‘Team Don’. The match took place on the astroturf in Stornoway.

Daniel said: “We had a great turnout on a wet day with quite a few spectators too. I was pleased that my team won but we were all there to raise money - most of the players are mates who used to play in the community league and a couple of junior and senior players from the local league.”

Karen Wilson, Fundraising Manager for Scottish Autism, said: “This was a tremendous effort by a young man and his friends and we would like to send Daniel a huge thank you.

“£1,310 is an amazing amount of money which will help us continue to provide a wide range of flexible and innovative support services for children and adults affected by autism across Scotland, focusing on improving their quality of life.”
