The Autism Society of America discovered this Friday, July 29th) a widespread national effort to attempt to fraud the organization by someone who is sending out bogus and fraudulent checks having the name "Autism Society of America" as the check sender.
Individuals are reporting to us receiving either mailed or express mailed delivered letters which include a bogus check with the name of the Autism Society of America on it payable to the individual receiving the bogus check. The individual is told in the mailing to either cash or deposit the check and send money back to an address that is not the address of the Autism Society of America.
The Autism Society of America nor any local or state Autism Society does not send such checks and asks that any individual getting such a check immediately notify their local Police Department. Such checks should not be cashed or deposited because doing so will possibly result in money being lost to the individual cashing or depositing the fraudulent and bogus check.
It appears the checks are also being sent via federal express. Please note that the federal express is of course not at all involved in this fraud and was not aware of what was in the federal express packages.
The Autism Society of America does have a direct mail campaign for support but never includes any payment or check in such an appeal. While this fraud on the Autism Society of America appears to be widespread, no funds have been lost by the organization due to the highest level of accountability and checks and balances it has on payments from its corporate bank account.

To have someone or a group of individuals attempt to steal money from our organization and to have un suspecting individuals lose money to this fraud is evil and mean. We will seek the FBI and all appropriate government justice agencies to find who is behind this fraud and once they are found, demand the highest level of judicial prosecution and punishment for such terrible human beings," said Scott Badesch, President/CEO of the Autism Society of America.
