Ha ha, sorry no free beer, just me :P

My name is Ian and I live in the "Sunny" South West of England although for the last few weeks we've been up to our necks in flood water and fighting off 30 foot high waves from Hurricane Hercules (or whatever they ended up calling it).

A few years ago my son was diagnosed as autistic and that opened my eyes to the world of neuro-developmental conditions.

I left a meeting at his primary school following a review of his IEP and I was in tears after realising that the meeting may just as well been about me.

I work in a pretty stresful job, and recently I had a massive breakdown after 18 months of mentoring trainees, I was referred to the local Community Mental Health Team and was diagnosed with Aspergers on Thursday.

I have displayed almost every "typical" sign from childhood and when I told a trusted colleague in work they about my diagnosis it was apparent that most people had "guessed" before I had a chance to tell anyone.

I've had a good look round and it appears that you're all a great bunch who support each other whole heatedly, I hope I can reciprocate.

Hi Ian, I'm so glad you found us. There are quite a few of us who were diagnosed with Asperger's later in life, and like you have had that moment when our "quirks" made so much sense. I am 56 years old, and was only diagnosed this past fall. The people here are wonderful and happy to answer whatever questions you may have. Welcome to our aspiescentral family.
 
I did, and even though it was freezing where I live, I understand that many people had it worse. Still managed to stay above zero degrees here (thank goodness).

I keep thinking back to situations from my past where I was really hypercritical of myself, and relating them to my diagnosis.

It's a brave new world, where things are now making a little more sense (not much mind).

I was only diagnosed last year and I am 48. May your journey be an enjoyable one here.

Thanks for the welcome, I'm hoping I'll find out more about the "real me" in months to come rather than the pseudo NT me created by 44 years of trying to "fit in".

Just setting off on my journey, checked my provisions and the radio appears to be working fine. Managed to navigate my way (with a lot of help from friends) out of the worst storm for a while so the future is looking brighter.
