maycontainthunder hasn't been here for a while, he's probably busy, but I also asked that question some time ago. And if I remember correctly, it stands for Version 4. It's Dog, Version 4.
Does it mean it's his forth dog, or his dog goes through different states of evolution?

LOL. I had a neighbor who once had a dog and a cat. With similar names...though the cat's name was "dog" and the dog's name was...well, you see where that went.
