Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - first look...

About five years have passed in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (out May 31, 2019) since the events depicted in 2014’s Godzilla. Which isn’t nearly enough time for people to stop freaking out about the discovery that they share the planet with a gargantuan lizard.

“The world is reacting to Godzilla in the same way we would react to any other terrifying incident, in that we are overreacting,” says director Michael Dougherty, whose previous credits include the horror movie Krampus. Godzilla hasn’t been seen since that destructive finale, “but there’s paranoia and endless speculation about whether he is the only one out there or whether we’re threatened by others like his kind.”

King of the Monsters makes it enormously clear that there are other big beasts, notably the three-headed King Ghidorah, the giant insect Mothra, and another flying monster, Rodan, who in the original Japanese movies could create hurricane-force winds.

“Rodan’s been kind of a sidekick character, but I’ve always had a soft spot for him” says Dougherty. “In a lot of ways he’s more powerful than Godzilla. He’s like this winged A-bomb. I think we’ve done him justice.” But let’s not forget Godzilla himself, who reveals he has the ability to exhale “atomic breath.” Can Dougherty expand on that description? “Not without giving away too much,” he laughs. “But it takes place at a very key moment and it’s a sort of call to arms.”

The 2019 film’s human characters include Dr. Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga), a scientist working for the beastie-hunting organization Monarch, and her daughter Madison, who is portrayed by Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown. The pair are kidnapped by what Dougherty describes as “a mysterious organization, with their own plans for the creatures.”

The director cast Kyle Chandler as Mark Russell, Emma’s ex-husband and Madison’s father, who embarks on a rescue mission in cahoots with two more Monarch members, played by Godzilla veterans Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins. Given that Chandler also costarred in Peter Jackson’s 2005 remake of King Kong, perhaps he may stick around for the next installment in Legendary Entertainment’s “MonsterVerse”: 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong. Speaking of which, does Dougherty set up that face-off in his film? “It’s not like we’re bending over backwards to introduce Kong, but there’s definitely some bread crumbs,” says the director. Bread crumbs the size of boulders, we assume.

RELATED
In relation to Godzilla, I thought I'd post this here for any Godzilla fans on this site who are interested.

Back in the 1970's, Toho Co Ltd - the company that created Godzilla - created a live-action TV series called Zone Fighter, which takes place in the showa era movie canon (inbetween Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973) and Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla (1974)) and featured a family of friendly alien refugees who have made their home on Earth and now try to defend it from the Garoga; the same race that destroyed their world, with the family's oldest son Hikaru been able to transform into a giant to battle the various mechanical/genetically engineered/recovered kaiju that the Garoga use as their weapons.
The show is similar to Ultraman, but has the distinction of having Godzilla in the show as an occasional ally and having both Gigan and King Ghidorah in the show as enemies on separate occasions.

Sadly the show has never received either an English Dub or even English Subtitles outside of a few fansubs for certain episodes.
However, there is currently an Indiegogo campaign going on to try and raise money to get the whole of the series subtitled into English. The link is here if you're interested; whether you want to contribute or want to share the link around on other websites: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/zone-fighter-translation-adventure#/

Here's the battles involving Godzilla monsters:
1. Zone Fighter and Godzilla vs. Wargilgar and Spyler
2. Zone Fighter vs. King Ghidorah (Battle 1)
3. Zone Fighter vs. King Ghidorah (Battle 2 and 3)
4. Godzilla/Zone Fighter vs. Gigan
5. Zone Fighter and Godzilla vs. Zandolla
6. Zone Fighter vs. Godzilla (Spar) / Zone Fighter and Godzilla vs. Jellar and Kastam-Jellar
7. Zone Fighter and Godzilla vs. Spideros and Garoborg

Meh, no one cares about Monster movies any more, not like the Japanese "B Movies" of the 50's, where you could virtually tell the "Monster" was a guy in a suit.

I think plenty of people still care about them, and with Godzilla and King Kong set for a showdown in 2020 not seen since their 1961 film, I think a fair few people will be flocking to the cinemas to see that clash.

Here's the trailer, and I think it looks awesome. :)

Very Excited, I took my Son to both the Godzilla and King Kong remakes I thought they were Awesome.

Also, I read somewhere there were 2 movies in the making this one and Godzilla vrs King Kong I don't know it'sits true or not

Yep. Godzilla and Kong will clash in the 2020 film "Godzilla vs. Kong", which will also feature other monsters aside from the main two.
This is a big one for a lot of fans because the last time these two clashed on film, it was back in 1962.
