Going back to college again

I am going back to college after taking an eight year break. I will get a degree in computer information systems so I can finally become a computer technician. I hope things go better than they did last time I went to college. Last time I went to college I stayed in the dorms and they wanted me to take several classes at once. One of those classes was an algebra class. I am not very good at math and had to spend all my time focusing on the algebra class so I could pass it. I did not have time to do my other classes and failed them. Things finally got too crazy with that college and I dropped out. Now I am taking my classes online and will take them one at a time so I will be able to complete them all. Some of those classes will have to be taken at the college and I will have to stay in the dorms again but I will make sure they let me take just one class this time to avoid a repeat of what happened before. It sure is nice to be back in school.

Go for it!

I learned a great deal about writing via arguing about politics online. Having a strong opinion, and then having people judge your opinion on your writing really helped. I could write a paper in what seemed to be no-time after a few years of that (I was working in tech support and had plenty of time).

Make sure that you can get special considerations for test taking early on, as you never know when you will need it.

You may need to record the professor and/or have someone take notes for you and/or copy other folks notes. I would imagine that asking several people may be best.

A friend of my sisters went to a program where they would only have one class at a time (not multiple classes during the same semester). The semesters / units were accelerated, but were one at a time! I think that this would do wonders for folks like us!

Remember to:
  • GO TO EVERY CLASS
  • SIT IN FROUNT
  • INTERACT WITH THE TEACHER
  • GET THE TEACHER TO LEARN YOUR NAME
  • GO TO ANY STUDY SESSION (mention the study sessions in class! In study group <Erik> mentioned <XYZ> and I thought it was a good point).
Showing respect for your teacher (see above) is a HUGE deal! It can buy you leeway, and will often get you a better grade. Basically not doing the above is showing disrespect (aside from study sessions, this is still showing respect, but learning others perspectives on a topic could be gold!).
