Good Day Today!

I had a bit of a bright spot today after having a numbing week. I managed to get enrolled and accepted into a community college program where I will be doing an associates in applied health and science. I will have to get my pre-requisites done such as microbiology and human anatomy and physiology I and II (fish physiology doesn’t count I guess from majoring in marine biology) in the Spring and Summer then I will be able to be eligible to apply for nursing school and do my bachelors of nursing science (BSN). This will be a major career switch for me and I hope it will be worth it!

Thought I share a good part of my day.

Also here’s a fish I caught a rio grande cichlid at my apartment complex.

Congrats on getting into the college! So exciting that you have made up your mind, big decisions like that are always such a tough process for me. I hope nursing is a great & rewarding career path for you!

Thanks! I believe in myself that I can succeed in the medical field. I personally contemplated on the fact needed a change. I was so fixated on the fact I needed to stay in the marine biology field when I knew for a while now opportunities are hard to come by in the field.

Now to go educate one of my friends who literally texted me asking what happens if you stab someone’s liver. Umm I’m not going to school to be a surgeon cutting into people haha.

No need to worry about stabbing someone in the liver being a nurse.
They would suffer internal bleeding though if you did. 🤢

The medical field is a good career choice IMO.
I took various Medical Arts in University and thought about nursing also.
Ended up being a pharmacist.
It is a fascinating field. Congrats, and I hope you find it rewarding.

@Dillon That question sounded rather specific. I would  not recommend sharing medical knowledge with that friend and would recommend being cautious around this person.

@Dillon - Microbiology was one of the hardest classes I have taken. You'll do fine based on your education in marine biology but it was like a foreign language to me that I had to memorize.

Congratulations!

Oh I was joking about that with my friend and wasn’t planning on saying anything, we tend to aggravate each other and for as long as I’ve known her. Besides probably don’t want to hear my answer anyway 😅

Nursing is tough, not gonna lie. I’ve been a nurse for 12 years and it’s been a rough road to say the least. My advise to you is to get good at your communication skills, organizational skill, time management and reading body language and how you respond to certain behaviors from patients and emergencies. Having AS makes it more difficult for people like us than our neurotypical peers, but you can learn. If you wanna ask any questions, send me a PM and I’ll be happy to answer.

What area of nursing do you do? Have you found any specific roles that work best with your autism? I’m a nurse too and have found floor nursing difficult. I’m now an intake nurse on a psych unit and it works really well with my brain. Was thinking I might try Utilization Review or work on the insurance side of things if I ever switch roles, as I think those could work well.

Now that I think about it I feel it may be a bit difficult and that’s with more of my social communication. I am use to being around people even those I don’t know and like to initiate conversations but I notice I do have trouble at times interpreting social cues where misunderstandings may occur. Reciprocal communication is one I’m working on as it gets to where if I’m stressed or overstimulated I have trouble expressing ideas to the other person at a given moment.
