Great Week of Teaching!

Wanted to give an update on how my new job has been going and only one word can describe it…wonderful!
I mentioned earlier that I would be teaching 7th-8th grade middle schoolers at a charter school, well that never actually happened/materialized so instead I had been assigned to teach
3rd-4th grade math/science.
Before my first day I’m just thinking “oh these kids are pretty young and are going to be pretty rowdy with some behavioral problems” when In fact it was the total opposite.
On my first day I introduced myself and when I mentioned I specialized in marine biology/ocean life oh boy hands started going up of students asking questions about my experience as a scientist.
I was literally blushing thinking alright this is going to be a really good class.
After i introduced myself the students wanted to introduced themselves so I let them.
Afterwards I passed out their assignments for the day in which I have been showing them how to add and subtract fractions and do basic long division. I also let them work in groups of 2-3 and they were shocked that they could work together but really excited and made me think did the other teacher never encouraged group work?
An hour had passed and by the time it was ready for the students to line up at the door to go to their next class I was literally told that I was the best teacher they ever had (again I literally just started). I was given hugs by the students and literally many of the students were telling some of their teachers about me as I’ve been hearing gossip throughout the school now on my 4th day there of just how excellent of a teacher I have been. One student tried to give me her squish mallow but as much as I wanted to it can’t accept a gift from a student as a professional so I just let her know that I didn’t want it right now but maybe next time.
later on my first day had the 3rd graders which I thought how I’m I going to manage 3rd graders? Well I didn’t had to worry much because just like the 4th graders the 3rd graders were really nice to work, really eager to learn and engaged. let’s just say that they like to gossip such as a group of them were asking each other “is he single/married?” and a few seconds later a student asked me directly “do you have a crush on someone?” After that question I knew I was put on the spot but told them that it was top severely via the government and they just thought that was funny.
Just like the 4th graders, the 3rd graders just thought I was the best substitute teacher I’ve ever had as other teachers mainly belittle them, talk mean to them, and just treat them like 3-4 graders and nothing more which that is just really and truly sad and unfortunate to hear.
Next week I won’t be their teacher for only a couple of days and when the students learned about that they were quite sad to hear that even some of them cried which of course made me quite sad.

In less than a week I’ve already had every teacher and many students talk about me throughout the school which honestly is kind of over stimulating for me personally but really flattering. Also on top of that the head of the school wants to meet with me the middle of next week which I’m like oh what can it be a potential full time gig!?

I hope this job keeps getting better as it’s only just getting started!

Great to hear. :) My wife is a special ed teacher but started subbing in regular schools and although not an easy job by any means it can be rewarding. More of a vocation than a job one simply does for pay.

I’m able to post this though now because the cool thing about teaching at the charter school is that we have Fridays off so a nice 3 day weekend. Also higher pay than usual for a regular sub at $20-$21 an hour so that’s a plus.

I read your post last week, I'm really happy that your new job suits you and your work is being appreciated both by teachers and students I think you did amazing.
Please pay attention to work-life-balance, those jobs can be very taxing even if they bring much joy.

You are the right type of person to be a teacher. It takes a lot of hard work and determination to do what you do. A lot of teachers these days only go half the mile and don’t want to do the full work. It’s important to have a teacher like you because it makes students feel safe and secure. In a way you’re not just a teacher to them, but a friend or authority figure. It’s simple as someone like you who students can rely on.

You bring passion and joy to this group of kids. Full-time teachers can and do burnout. We have a huge amount of discipline problems in our schools currently. They can't even keep school bus drivers due to the issues of rowdy kids.

Right all of that is true but what gets me is that some (not all) teachers don’t treat these kids as human beings “oh they’re just 3rd and 4th graders and they don’t know any better.” Well no every kids that is in that classroom is unique and we must treat them as such. They fact that some kids are rowdy may come from an underlying problem such as problems at the home, having a bad day, or maybe experiencing trauma but we just tend to ignore all of those aspects. I don’t believe yelling at a student like some teachers do does any good since I believe that reinforces the idea that a student can still push over that boundary and also ruins the student-teacher relationship.
While teaching these kids the last several days I had a couple kids that were acting up and instead of being argumentative I perused patience and reminded the students what they were doing is not right. That softer approach seems to soften the environment and not escalate things.
The fact the students said “I am the best teacher I’ve ever had” says many things such as the teachers before me didn’t care or didn’t want to put in the effort.
I bring passion and joy in to what I do not because it’s my job but it’s mainly who I am as a person.
