Not counting paid for streaming services, there's millions on catch-up services like BBC iPlayer and 4OD in the UK.
YouTube is particularly popular because it not only provides a second platform, but it allows website owners to seamlessly integrate video into their own sites - for free & with no viewing limits or data caps - without affecting the data limits or bandwidth of their sites, When you purchase server space for a website you pay for the amount of data your website can contain and the amount of data traffic in a given period - i.e. you pay for the amount of visitors there are and the data they consume. Video carries high overheads in size and bandwidth but hosting on YoutTube takes that burden off the website owner.
Vimeo is pretty good in that respect, but only for low volumes - you have to pay for any kind of serious use. It's a better platform overall, but the YouTube ad-supported model works better for most people.
To give a personal perspective - I can host my videos on my website now if I want to, but if I hosted my videos on my website rather than on YouTube, even with the relatively low subscriber base I have currently, I'd have to upgrade my web package and pay more because of the traffic. My bill would double immediately. I don't get paid for making videos, I pay for it all out of my own pocket. I can't afford to host elsewhere, and I know that applies to the vast majority of independent content producers like myself.
