I'm Simples (the name has no real bearing, aside from my original choice being unavailable, and the coincidence of watching meerkat manor while browsing the web just now)

33 year old male based in the United Kingdom, and have been struggling with who I am for most of my life.
Suspected aspergers/asd, have gradually become self aware the last couple years.. I also have longstanding issues with depression, anxiety/stress through circumstance as well as traumatic events when I was younger
(for the sake of example a violent unprovoked group assault which on reflection left me damaged)

The icing on the cake is wether its a fear of rejection (being fobbed off or dismissed) , not wanting to dump on other people or appear vulnerable, I have phenomenal difficulty in "opening up" on any level.

I'm into computers (gaming), Music (absolutely love music, to the extent of learning guitar so I could play stuff I like),
Movies, documentaries.. not so much tv but there are a few older shows I like (reality tv is garbage)
I read often (but not into stories/fiction), thought about getting into writing/media when things are a little better.

I've had jobs, though the local economy took a dump on me and I'm unemployed currently.. however I keep a routine of volunteering (low "exposure" roles where I don't have to deal with people much but for causes I am passionate about) and also doing courses here and there, if something interests me, converting that interest into learning a qualification is effortless, I'll get obsessed and go into cruise control, soaking it all up.

Support network leaves alot to be desired.. theres family who I care about yet can't really confide in.
Couple failed relationships and friendships that simply faded away over time as everybody relocates to settle down and so on.

I took steps early this year to try and turn things around and start the process of diagnosis by approaching my doctor, on the basis it would open up some sort of support network and help me be at peace with myself, however this was a disaster from my perspective, I ended up being refered to talking therapy
(which only lasted one session, the therapist although nice suggested I needed to go back to my doctor and seek a referal to clinical psychiatrist, which was infact what I had originally done when i first saw my doctor, only to be refered to TP instead)

I took all of this as a knockback, I had done several of the online tests (somebody else attending the college I did courses with suggested them to me, I scored very high but I felt like they were not to be taken seriously) but also had spent time reading the various literature on the subject (including the DSM-5 revisions)

Theres a wierd sense of relief when looking at the experiences of others and realizing while nobody is the same, there are plenty of things in common where you think "I'm like that, too"

Well, That Escalated Quickly :) It may not seem like much, but felt like an eternity typing this lot out.

(if you took the time to read all of this, thank you... because of the different way health systems are setup, I would be especially interested to hear of UK-based users' experiences when going through the Dx process)

Hey :)

Welcome, this is a grand community, you'll find many a sympathetic ear.

I'm 35 and was diagnosed earlier this year after my son was diagnosed. I'm up and down with it, but I'll get there eventually. I actually had to go over my doctor's head and see someone myself for diagnosis, so I feel your pain about not being listened to!

Welcome :)

We do have a great community here. Feel free to join our discussions, and ask questions.

Feel free to also browse our recommended readings section, for books on AS recommended by our members: Resources | AspiesCentral.com

In Oz, I was not taken seriously by a psychiatrist and a psychologist... I sought out a Tony Attwood supervised/trained psychologist. I am a "Residual Aspergers" - I have coined the neologism Raspie! RAADS r = 208.

Welcome! You will find many kindred spirits here. I'm struggling with some similar issues myself. But let's remain optimistic! Without optimism, there is no hope.

how well I know this sentiment . . .

Welcome from another Newbie, you introduced yourself well and you will find many like-minded and like-experienced people here.

Thank you all for the replies,

I sought out a Tony Attwood supervised/trained psychologist.

I've read his literature and found it very informative, he also has some good videos on YT where he discusses asd 1 to 1 with people that have it, if you are anything like I can be in which sense you get interested in something and HAVE to learn as much as you can about it, would certainly recomend following up :)

Getting a specialist with that level of training is hit and miss though, feels a little like despite the outstanding effort of a few, societys attitude (which is not helped by the medias awful stereotyping and general lack of training/awareness in medical community) is going in reverse.
