GRUMPY CAT NEEDS HELP WITH PS2!

It's me. I just hooked up my PS2 again and I'm finding out that some disks aren't playing. It's saying it can't read them while others are playing fine. I thought it was because the disks were used, but I bought a new game and it isn't playing while another new disk is playing. What do I do? I looked online and its showing some stuff about taking the console apart and I'm a girl - taking apart electronics isn't my thing. Is that what needs to be done? I need some Aspie help. Thanks! :)

Given some disks work while others don't, consider trying the simplest of solutions first.

Clean the disks in question and examine them for scratches before assuming the PS2's optical drive has issues.

It might also be of benefit to shoot some canned air into the open disc tray, get all the bunnies living in there off of the laser apparatus.

I second the canned air thing. And the thing someone else said about cleaning all the disks. Rule out the easiest to fix issues before assuming its a harder to fix one. Oh and if your like me and cant follow instructions without a visual aid, youtube probably has video instructions for fixing it if it does turn out to be your PS2 itself that's the problem.

I'm getting some cleaning disk from Amazon for DVD players and game systems. Is that canned air you are talking about? If I use something like that, is the pressure high enough to damage something in the machine?

Nope. Your only worry is that you don't want to blow lint and dust into a trapped space where it does more harm. The trick is to make sure whatever you're blowing out does just that- goes OUT. Just make sure not to make direct contact with the laser itself.

This thread just makes me recall my first DVD player in the 90s....an older optical drive where it could occasionally get real persnickety about what DVDs it would play and what it wouldn't. Cleaning them usually helped, but not in each and every case.

The only thing the cleaning disk will do is clean the lens on the laser. You'll still need to buy a can of compressed air (available at WalMart, Staples, Target, Rat Sh!t, er, Radio Shack) and blow out the drive.

Hey! I have a Rat Sh!t right down the street! I think I'll go there.

It's 2015; emancipate yourself woman! Get some screwdrivers, take that thing apart, blow out all the dust and put it back together. If it works, congratulations, if it doesn't, commend yourself for trying and get yourself a new one as a reward; they don't cost that much.:D

Or just clean the disks and stuff. I don't know.

It's me! I figured something out, but don't know what the cause is. The PlayStation isn't playing any discs that are purple on the back. What can I do with that? It must not be dust. Help please.

Thank goodness I didn't perform unnecessary surgery! Mr. Playstation2 may not have made it out alive! :p

**It was making horrible noise too trying to play those discs - just like the article said. You'd think that Sony would know it was happening.
