hairdressers?

Do you like going to the hairdressers?

“My servants never die!”
I don’t like the hairdressers. I don’t like being touched. Going to the hairdressers is quite the ordeal in itself. And let’s not start on the awkward silences when they try to make small talk. It’s really not my favorite place. What about you?

One word: CLIPPERS!

I loathe the touching, the inane chit chat, the people talking around me, the occasional bodily odour or somebody sneezing - YUK!

About 20 years ago I bought a set of clippers and apart from a short period about 13 years ago when my clippers I had then broke, I've sported a grade 1 buzz cut or completely shaved head. I know most ladies wouldn't be so keen on that solution, but it works for me :)

I like the wording on the poll options. :D

Guys definitely have it easier. I use clippers too, except for when they were broken or when I was homeless. I can do a reasonable job of it with scissors, though.
If it'll make you feel any better, the skin cancer full body check ups I have to have every three months are even more awkward. :confused:
Quicker though...

Did I mention the unbearable moment when they massage your scalp. Ugh.

I’m trying to persuade my sibling to cut my hair since they can do it a little for themself and my dad...but apparently I’m awkward. Still, if I can have this alternative it’s better for me.

I try!

Ugh, another reason to hate the hospital. I have a gynecological condition that requires me to have once a year checks. Involving the scan. Not only are they awkward, but they’re painful too. So yeah, I understand you on that.

Yep I get that totally. I have to see the Rheumatologist every six months and Physios at different six month intervals. The poking and prodding does ma heed right in!!!
It's worth seeing the physios 'cos I get to do Hydrotherapy every now and again and that can be great when you've finished your exercises. Ten minutes of floating in warm water with the sound of the water flowing over the edge, eyes closed. Bliss :)

Actually this thread has reminded me to get my clippers charged up 'cos I need to do my hair tonight ready for recording tomorrow :eek:

I trim my fringe (bangs).

Went once when a teen and never again.

The idea of someone touching my hair and being up close to me, makes me ill.

I have long hair in no particular style, so happily no need to visit the torture place lol

It definitely is a torture...

I’d cut my hair but I don’t trust myself with scissors...

I also don’t trust my mom to do it....(she did it once and it was the day before school picture day, I ended up with a short slanted bangs..it was awful)

Although my hair is straight, notice that the fringe is not and got into the trick on where to cut, so when it curves, it goes just above my eyes.

Meh, at my age my hair is receding and going grey anyway.

And I'm only 42.

I go for a haircut round about every 5 weeks.

I used to dislike it, but now I just see it as a perfect opportunity to practice making small talk. I don't mind the touching, so that helps ;)

Dislike noisy places, with people talking all the time or music playing. So I've found one locally that's quiet with only two hairdressers who never seem to be all that busy. They appear to be building a customer base, so at the moment the place is relatively empty. When they manage to have many people coming in at the same time I'll probably stop going.

I go for trims every few months, they don't touch me or put their hands on my shoulders like some have. And they don't push my head around physically with their hands, like I'm a doll, they ask me to move. So far it's worked out well.

I've also trimmed my own hair at different times, and there are many youtube videos on how to trim or cut your own hair. Which have been helpful.

I used to really hate the sensation of hair clippings down the back of the neck but that doesn't bother me any more. Whether that's because I've become less sensitive or because of improvements in the protective gowns I don't know.

And maybe I was misdiagnosed, but I love scented products - it's Aveda all the way for me. That's the main reason why I haven't attended Autscape yet.

The only downside to me is the price. That and if the stylist compliments me on my hair colour (100% natural Scandinavian-style blond) my mind goes off on a tangent and I wonder why it's had so little impact in terms of my love life. Does that make me sound really shallow?

I like nice scented products too. A good perfume/aftershave (in moderation), certain hair or skin products my wife uses and I love fruity scented glycerin soaps.
I am sensitive to smells, but selectively so. If someone wears too much or too strong a scented product I can feel like I'm choking and my worst bugbear is biological smells. Anything scatological or even the slightest whiff of body odour and I turn green in no time.
So in a hairdresser the hair products wouldn't usually bother me but if someone near me was unclean or had pointed the deodorant can in the wrong direction that morning I'd either be off or looking for a bucket (not to mention getting VERY agitated)

Hate it, but have to go because I can't so it myself. I HATE it when the hairdresser pushes my head around or ties the gown too tightly around my neck, and I HATE it when she starts to talk to another customer waiting behind and and talks loudly near my ear. The last time I asked her not to do that, now maybe she thinks I'm rude, but I really couldn't tolerate it.

@Mia

Yes, the moving the head around. It’s not always gentle either. I’m glad that you have found one that you can go to.

@Bolletje

Practice is a good read to go and do things, I agree. So I’m glad that you can do that. It’s definitely something to give a try.

@Aeolienne

No worries, you don’t sound shallow but there’s more to relationships than hair color.

@Autistamatic

I’m sensitive to certain smells too. Obviously, certain body odors would affect anyone but we currently have a scented berry hand soap at the moment and it’s so sickly smelling I hate it. Haha.

@Progster

When you feel like you’re going to choke because they’ve tied you in the gown too tight. Or when they wash your hair and no matter how careful you are, they always seem to get water down your back. So I end up choking, manhandled, uncomfortable because I don’t like water running down on me like that AND then they leave you alone to talk to another customer or start on another customer...

So yes, totally relate!
