Happy Food Stamp Day

Sure you may be celebrating May the 4th Be With You, as I am too, but what today really is about is Food Stamps showing up on my EBT card.

Without further ado, here is a song about how I feel right now:

But for me, I think I'd be singing about how I can finally splurge on yogurt, sushi, kombucha, cheese, pizza crust, mushrooms, water kefir and pineapple juice. Oooh and the Starbucks at the grocery store accepts food stamps for the cold drinks. Someone's gonna get a dragonfruit refresher!

After food stamp day, though, I shop extra careful and only buy mom food for scratch meals, staying within budget. But.. food stamp day.. dude, it's on.

I can feel this song too. End of the month, as the cabinets go bare, all your food starts tasting like the color grey/brown. It's a celebration when your food stamps come in, I tell you!

I've met so many poor people who have had no idea what a food kitchen is...

it's very sad..

than there was that girl from Norway..

whose bills where going unpaid , was about to go hungry for weeks and wanted me to give her nitro.. in a country that basically tosses free money your way...

as a family that had fun time with systems that approached authoritarianism by giving people free stuff

this is just a self-fulfilling prophesy for why this crap is a fools errand

Sounds like your first-of-the-month grocery run was a regular celebration. I'm impressed. You & the daughter were always better at cooking than I am.

I do not have an EBT card or anything like that, but it sounds like it worked pretty good for you.

It's true that people can always get help here if they need it, Norway is ridiculously rich and there's always a place to get help. But it's something most people really, really want to avoid doing. They don't want to ask the authorites for money. Young people may have less problems with it now, but many from the older generations would rather live in a box under a bridge than ask for help. I'm not surprised that she asked you for help instead of the authorities, it makes sense.

It's the same here in the United States too. We have a sense of "pride" where it's hard to ask for financial help. I became disabled and we really struggled with food and paying bills. Finally a friend told me that she received government assistance, and I was surprised. She worked a full time job and seemed really capable. I went down and applied, but felt so ashamed. Nowadays though, I am absolutely thankful for the help, as we would be homeless without it.

My parents, well, my mom especially, however, she'd rather starve than ask for help. As kids, sometimes all we had to eat was a small portion of rice or potatoes for dinner. My uncle would come over and lament that my mother was the only woman on earth that could feed five people on one chicken breast. I thought that was normal, and was shocked when he came over and barbecued us each our own big fat chicken breast. I felt like a glutton, after how I was raised, but my belly was actually full. It felt so good.

After knowing deep hunger as a child, I always make sure our cupboard is full, and that my daughter, no matter how poor we are, has the best resources in life. I've put her in clubs that are mostly for richer families. Although I get socially snubbed by some of the parents, all I care about is that my daughter is getting into a good college now. She's a good kid, and I hope and pray she'll escape the generational poverty of my family.

I was once asked by my vocational teacher if I knew how sex worked , I kinda just gave him a look like he was crazy...

when I asked why he asked me that and why it happens he simply said "it's either society or the family or a mix"

I feel in this case it's going to be society and when I deal with that , it's almost too much to bear
