Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to begin autism-friendly performances

A run of autism-friendly performances of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is set to begin in London’s West End.

The stage-play, which has proved an immeasurable success since it’s opening night in July 2016, will appear on Broadway and also in Australia by the end of this year.

And the play has become so popular here in the UK that the shows producers, in conjunction with the National Autistic Society, have also decided to create an adapted version for those with autism.

Relaxed performances
So-called “relaxed performances” contain subtle changes which make the experience more comfortable for someone with autism.

All staff, including cast and security, will have had training in autism, and a “visual story” will be given to theatre-goers beforehand. Small adaptations will also be made to sound and lighting to make the theatre a more comforting environment.

“Autism-friendly performances can be a fantastic way for people on the autism spectrum to enjoy a live theatre show,” the National Autistic Society website says.

“These shows will have had adjustments made in the form of reduction to sound levels, some changes to lighting and loud sound effects and strobe lighting taken out.

“There will be a relaxed attitude to movement in and out of the auditorium and there will be some designated chill-out areas available.

“The shows, which are listed as ‘Relaxed performances’, will also include audience members who have other disabilities.”

The National Autistic Society has had success with its other relaxed performances. So far, autism friendly versions of The Lion King, War Horse and Gangsta Granny have been performed with more planned for the future.

Good move on the show's part.

Still don't like the book due to both what I've heard and experiences with terrible (in my opinion) sequel series' (Children Of The Bard and A Vision Of Shadows).
