This is the health and nutrition thread where you can post advice on how to improve your body and general health.

One thing, alot of times when people try to eat healthier they think oh the fat free thing is better for you, that is not always the same. Some products will add in extra sugar to compensate for the lack of taste from the fat they took out. Also some fats are better for you than others. Reduced fat peanut butter is a good example. Peanuts have one of the good fats, you still don't want to go overboard, but when they take the good fat out and add sugar in to compensate, it ends up being worse for you.
 
Knowing what a "serving" size equals is useful.
I remember thinking I was being quite restrained when
I measured a quarter cup of raisins for my snack.

This is not restrained, if you are hypoglycemic.
Eventually I concluded that 10 raisins along with some
cheese was safer, more appropriate. [10 grapes were
on a list as a serving for a diabetic person. That's how
I came to dole out 10 raisins for myself.]

Another example is the amount of bean dip I used to
eat. A cup. This was excessive, I learned. From
experience and from reading about what a 'serving'
of beans typically equals.

Too little or too much, neither one is good.
 
I take non-hexane extracted algae based omega 3s after a well known vegan nutritionist who I 'know' on twitter advised them when we were chatting about Asperger's. He said that they can be helpful for brain fog and cognitive issues amongst other things but the therapeutic dosage that tallies with that used in research is 4 capsules a day as opposed to the 2 recommended on the packaging. I was skeptical but as I had such a supplement in the cupboard that was not going anywhere I thought I would try it. I have to say that it has helped considerably and I really notice a negative difference when I forget to take it for a day or so. I would imagine a good quality fish oil based supplement would also help but as I am vegan I take the algal one. Another one is b12, it is so important but even many omnivores are deficient and those with gut problems as well as older people are more likely to be deficient. B12 is water soluble so any excess is excreted by the body. I personally take a high sublingual dose every day, though a high dose twice a week is sufficient for most people. It is the Doctor's best brand and is the methyl- form of b12 but is cheaper than many lower dose cyano- versions of b12.
