Hello Everyone- (Self-Diagnosed Aspie)

I decided to come and check out the community here. Here is a bit of a synopsis of how I think I likely have Asperger's Syndrome.

Right now I am 26 and I work as a hotel night clerk and a teacher education major in college.

When I was younger I had a difficult time making friends and had trouble getting along at school with teachers and had some troubles with emotional melt downs at home. I got picked on a lot for some odd behaviors and had trouble making friends. I have always had some weird obsessions such as when I was around 10 years old my obsession was learning everything I could about the history of Elvis Presley and got teased for being able to tell people things such as his favorite type of aftershave lotion (Brut). I had some others that I will discuss later in the special interests forums. I also have a vivid and detailed memory of things such as conversations that happened 15-20 years ago. I have always been rather good at mathematics with the exception of Geometry related math and my most recent level 2 Calculus class.

It was suggested by a friend that I might have Asperger's Syndrome but I looked into it but figured since I was missing a few key symptoms such as sloppy hand writing and not understanding facial expressions I probably didn't have it. Later, it was suggested by more people that knew me that I might have it so I looked into it even more and found out that many symptoms either fade away or the severity of them gets reduced as you get older, so I remembered into my childhood and realized that part of the reason my hand writing is good is because it got much better over the years, and I hold a pencil rather awkwardly that I got nagged at a lot from my pre-school and kindergarten teachers about that suits my writing style. When I was a young child I also was told a lot to look at people when they were talking to me, and recently a college teacher of mine said he noticed I don't often look at people during conversations. I also am a theatre actor and into the arts so I picked up a lot of what facial expressions mean and social cues through learning.

Behavior in school was a problem, but it got better by around middle school with a few episodes here and there after years of disciplining, counseling, and self reflection. I had a lot of melt downs and didn't naturally pick up the ability for appropriate behavior.

I am doing better now but I thought I'd join the community because it would be nice to talk to some people who are more familiar with this sort of life.

Thanks

I had a lot of difficulty at school, never was in the in-crowd and virtually had no friends. Spending most lunches in the library. I did not hear about AS until I was 29. I have now been diagnosed and finding out a lot of things about myself which would have made growing up easier. When I was young my family was very dysfunctional so my issues were never noticed.

Welcome :)

Many people with AS do have difficulties growing up, and many overcome those issues as adults. I didn't do too well in school when I was really young, but appear positively normal these days, to most people.

Yeah, I was wondering why so many people wanted to give insight now, but nobody really gave a damn when I posted this.
