I was recently diagnosed with Asperger's, it is all still very new to me. I guess I always knew something was different about me, I just wish that I could have been diagnosed earlier, I am 31. My Dad was diagnosed last year and my Uncle too, this encouraged me to look into it and here I am. After going through a difficult break-up and having to move back home I started seeing a counsellor who specialises in Autism and Asperger's and I was diagnosed about 4 weeks ago.

I think the main issues worth mentioning that I have had over the years are as follows: Drug and alcohol issues, depression and anxiety, problems concentrating in school, repetitive behaviours, getting into fights (physical and verbal), bridge burning with old friends, problems staying in a job for longer than 6 months, small talk, being too honest, issues around recognising other people's feelings and taking things too literally. I could mention more but I don't want to bore people, I think this is a good list which about sums me up over the years.

I hope that by writing this some other people may recognise similar problems in their own lives and a bit of solidarity can be felt. I am hoping that by learning about Asperger's, I will be able to understand myself better.

I haven't used drugs for over 2 months now and I have only been drinking once every few weeks. I would like to keep working towards not drinking at all. I feel much better in so many different ways when I don't drink or use drugs. Exercising has also been helping me to create a more positive routine and mindset.

I still have lots of things I would like to improve, but on the whole I feel much more positive about life.

Thanks for reading

Erik :)

Congrats on cleaning up your situation. Lots of us meander along with bad habits as coping skills and never see the light. I definitely read about myself in your list, and l am not sure if l want to reread it. Lol. It's amazing how we can rotate coping habits around to fill the void of feeling lost sometimes. This site helps with that. Feel there are other like-minded people and the issues are typical for us. Sometimes l get lost in what does this NT boss think about me, but l am very good in extreme situations. I think being on the spectrum - we live with such extremes in us that anything else is a welcome to get out of our extremes. But l supported myself from an early age so work isn't so much an issue. Think being on the spectrum as a child was too much for my mom, since she had a lot of her own issues which later became my issues.

Great to hear about no to drugs. There are so many people who lost jobs, money, spouses, cars, friends, family just due to bad drug habits.

Hi and welcome, I hope that you enjoy it here. You sound very self aware, that's so useful because then you can take action on issues, which you are doing. Great that you are making such good progress with drug use and alcohol. I more or less stopped alcohol last year, I agree it's a good goal and better for us.

I think now that you have this diagnosis a lot of confusion may be cleared up, and you can find stategies for what you are up against to manage things differently. I self diagnosed, but after I did that was certainly my experience.

Hi Alexej,

Yes, my Grandma has distant relatives from Scandinavia. I think a lot of people from Yorkshire and the North East have viking ancestry. There are a lot of dialect words that are from the vikings, sadly most of them are all but disappearing.
