Hello, might be an Aspie.

I am reluctant to say I am suffering from it.

Because I just thought I was normal all this time.

But I tick into a lot of symptom boxes on ADHD and Asperger's.

Except for a couple:

- I used to play a lot of basketball. That maybe just repetitive behavior as I played every single day. I was never good at it.
- I am not entirely afraid of crowds. It is sure uncomfortable. I need quite a lot of alcohol to be comfortable in clubs.
- I have some empathy. But when I watched documentaries of Asperger's Syndrome I couldn't really empathize. Which is a loop if you think about it.
- I am attracted to certain very loud noises and bright lights. I tend to imagine them as well. Don't know where does that go. I presumed Asperger's Syndrome sufferers tend to be irritated by all of them.
- I know emotion. I know people have emotion. One documentary made it seem as if Aspies are completely unaware. I have guilt too at times. Maybe.

I once took an Asperger's Syndrom online quiz a long time ago for fun and obviously it called me an Aspie. I dismissed it. I am an INTP. If anyone cared to research that up they'd also notice that INTP pretty much is mild Aspie. Or maybe not.

I only have come here because I have a growing suspicion. I am interested in cars to a pretty obsessive level. I never thought of it as Aspie related. Just pure boyish interest.

If anyone is wondering, 'banana bone' is what I heard on the track 'High Life' by Daft Punk a couple of minutes ago. Nice site. Auto-saves. Really helpful.

The question is, could you unofficially diagnose if I am an Aspie?

Welcome to AC! There are a lot people on varying points on the spectrum and or not all on here. If you really want to know get your self checked out. Its the best way to find out. I suspect as most of us did that we started with the level of suspicion unless our parents are the ones that took us to get diagnosed. But we're great place so have fun here, hang out we're a great support system.:)

Hi

The question is, could you unofficially diagnose if I am an Aspie?

Yeah, sure... why couldn't you? But I think I adressed it in the shoutbox earlier. It does depend on why you would want to have the "label". If you need support from social services, you pretty much need something on paper/official. If it's just for you to feel comfy and identify with a group, I don't think there's a reason to go through the stress of a therapist. That money might even be better saved, heh.

Welcome Bananabone!

You may be an Aspie or you might fall into some other category in the DSM or you might just be a slightly quirky NT. I myself am quirkier than a bicycle with sideways wheels. Please feel welcome here & get to know everyone. It won't take you long to determine whether or not ASD feels right for you. Formal testing could be a double edged sword. You might be able to access certain services & support systems or you might just be wasting your money. Depending upon where you live, the culture & your family, you might just wind up stigmatizing yourself. Either way, you'll work out what is best for yourself.

@Arashi222 I just diagnosed myself. Someone on asked me if I could be suffering from Asperger's when I made a thread about obsessive thoughts. Just ended up freaking out at the symptoms.

@King_Oni If the purpose of an official diagnosis is to receive support then it is of no use. I am awkward but I might be very very low on the scale. I get by just fine. I guess it could be the internet's fault. According to the internet I am suffering from Asperger's and ADD. I was never diagnosed in school with them. But I was terribly awkward, had very little social life, moderately poor grades, and etc.

@Soup I think I am going to be shrugged off if I do the formal testing. I will shrug of the formal testing as well. I don't think I have any major issues in living normally. As I wrote in my thread I can't sympathize with the documentaries. I can however, sympathize with serial killers. It sounds bizarre. I am not into killing people. Just some certain areas of interest that can make me do things that I would normally not do.

Getting off the line again, I just want to know how to alleviate some symptoms of Asperger's that I have. Such as obsessive thinking over my interests, outbursts of anger, and the inability to communicate effectively with strangers.

That is a tall order. I suspect the only way to do what you describe is with cognitive behavioral therapy with a talented therapist.

Finding a talented therapist is a daunting quest in itself. Over my lifetime I have seen maybe thirty psychologists, counselors, or psychiatrists. Two of them or about 7.5 percent were effective. Most of the others fell into the useless or marginally effective category.

I don't know...sounds like a rather quirky NT to me. I could be wrong, though.

Yeah, probably, obviously, I am not completely bothered or handicapped by this, maybe I just have a different definition of 'normal'. It's really difficult to judge. I am really just a little autistic I guess. But in a way that is not really impeding my life that I'd like to see a psychiatrist about. My 'autism' is more of a personality, like you said, I'm quirky. I just get comments and feedback to my behavior that hints to autism. Such as wearing the same clothes, being quiet, obsessive, anxious, and having outbursts(working in the gym helps alleviate that).

No way am I going to spend such money! 30 psychiatrists? I don't think its impeding my life. I think as Serendipity said, I am just quirky I guess.
