Hello, new here...

Faye

Well-Known Member
Hey everyone, I'm new here... though I'm sure you can come to that conclusion from the title.
I'm a 13 year old girl (am I younger than the rest of you all? I probably am.) (hm, saying I'm 13 makes me feel like no one's going to take me seriously now...)
I'm actually not sure if I have Asperger's or anything on the spectrum. My mom's on the edge on whether or not I missed being diagnosed, dad's pretty sure a diagnosis of something was missed and I've been looking into Asperger's. A lot seems to click, and mom just isn't convinced. Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but is there any way I could look further into it and get it checked? I'm just not sure how to get around that, or at least convince her that something's off...
Thanks if anyone can respond, I guess. (I am no good with this... Powering through that "I shouldn't post this should I?" feeling...)

Hi Faye, welcome to Aspiescentral.

If anything and you want a serious opinion see a therapist of sorts. There's a lot of self-diagnosed people on the internet that got their information online and in fact they're not. But surely there's exceptions.

Some things you should wonder is how much things impair your everyday functioning. Just being quirky and weird does not neccesarily make you autistic. In fact, in May, when the new diagnostics tool comes out therapists will diagnose autism a bit differently. The criteria have changed a bit. Not drastically. It also means Asperger's is just another form of autism, rather than a seperate thing. One of the criteria though is that it has to impair everyday functioning.

As for your age; I think you're one of the younger members. There's nothing wrong with it. Just a reminder though, we tend to discuss a lot of topics in a more adult fashion, as well as having an adult section. Be aware of this and it will be all fine.

Thank you, I'll try my best to stick around for a little while, I tend to forget these sites a day after joining... they get lost in my many bookmarks, you see. Better be more careful...

Well, I guess I'll have to wait and see until I can go to my therapist...
And I know the internet isn't always reliable for figuring things out, especially things such as diagnoses. After all, though there is a certain set of symptoms that generalises something some people may not display all necessarily or only display them mildly while others have them severely, as my example of sorts - yet it seems online tests go by that exact set, really.

And I realise this. Quirky and weird doesn't really count as a symptom for anything except being just that; quirky and weird, whereas I've found connections that click between quite a bit of what I've read up on (though once more not necessarily a diagnosis) and myself. I know that they're not entirely separate, as well.

And there's not a problem with that at all. I've never really gotten along well with people my own age, making friends with those either younger or older than myself. For whatever reason, people my age just hate me... I like to think that it's because I'm too intelligent for them and they want to be the "coolest". Though I'm homeschooling now so that isn't really a problem.

Hi Faye
Don't worry about your age, here your not judged. I've seen quite a bit of people post here that are around your age. There is a book called Freaks, Geeks and Asperger Syndrome: A User Guide to Adolescence by Luke Jackson. It has great information there, and maybe your mom could read it too. I think it is a good idea to convince your parents to get tested, that way everyone would know what is going on with you. Do you have Asperger or Autism Association where you live? If you do, they could direct you to the the right person to test you. Hope that helps. Good luck.

Welcome! I'm 15 turning 16 at the moment, you might be younger, but you will be taken seriously here.
It's great, have a good stay :)
