Hello! Newly Self-Diagnosed Aspie

I'm Beth. I'm eighteen and I've just finished my first semester in college. I've always had a sneaking suspicion that my weird habits and introvertiness were something more. It had never really caused me problems because my mother and godmother who home schooled me until fourth grade have backgrounds in special needs care and education and they taught me coping methods and such. However, having just moved out to live in college dorms I have started to really see how different I am from my roommates and other students. I have known what Asperger syndrome is all my life, but I stumbled upon a detailed list of traits and I was checking off one after the other. Then I mentioned it to my mom and she basically said "Yeah, I have always had my suspicions." So here I am, just looking to talk to people who get it. Excited to find my niche.:D

PS: Thanks to all the people in chat the other day and the mods and admins that helped sort out the technical problems.

Looking forward to getting to know you. I was also homeschooled, but for me it lasted through high school. It wasn't until I was about 27 that I started to realize I was different.
The funny thing is that long before I realized it, it was incredibly obvious (just not to me) how different I was. But to me it was the norm and I assumed that on the inside, everyone's thoughts were exactly the same as mine.

Hi Beth, welcome to AC! I hope you settle in quickly and find the answers you're looking for : )

I used to think the way I thought was the same as everyone else to, but it was very often pointed out in high school that that was not the case.

Welcome to Aspies Central Beth, I hope you can gain as much as you may be able to give. It all depends upon how you feel on the day.

I'm glad you've joined us Beth! I have found my fellow Aspies to be very supportive of each other, and happy to answer any questions you might have. I think you will enjoy the various forums here. Welcome to aspiescentral.

Oh, hello, Beth! :)

Your story is similar to mine---after some difficulty in college, I got my diagnosis, and it explained a ton of things that I'd never been able to make sense of before. I always thought I was just "weird." I still am, of course, but at least I now know some of it is because of the AS.

It's like meeting my kindred spirit after reading your introduction! I was homeschooled as well and have experience in special needs (physical and learning disabilities). My mother worked out that my father had Aspergers about 3 years ago then this February my parents told me that I probably had it, too. Then, like you, after looking at the symptoms properly I realised that they definitely applied to me in so many ways. Sorry for the ramble - just get so thrilled when meeting people that I actually have something in common with. :bounce: Looking forward to getting to know you :)
