Hello everyone

I am james (Jim) Dunn and I live in Tasmania Australia.

I have Aspergers as well as blind and have just joined. I am 50 years old and have a lovely Guide Dog named Bart as my companion

Hello Jim (from the other side of the world!), good to meet you. I hope you enjoy the forum. I haven't been here very long but I'm finding it really supportive and friendly. I'm 33 and only just found out I have Aspergers. How long have you known you're an Aspie?

I love dogs, what breed is Bart? We're hoping to get a labrador once my youngest daughter is a little older. It's not that long since she stopped peeing on the carpet so I need a break first lol.

Hello Digger

Bart is a dark brown pure bred Labrador he is just over 6 years old and I have had him as my guide dog for 4 years and 4 months. He is my first guide dog despite being offered one when I was 16 years old.

Labs are great dogs, stay pups for a long time and once house trained are not trouble. Bart holds on if he has to and if we are travelling, he goes as soon as we get out and find ground out the way.

Hello Vanilla

pleased to meet you.

I have no usable vision to effectively work with. in bright sunlight it looks just on dark to me and i have no hand movement in front of my face.

I get around well with cane and or dog. I access the world using text to speech and a Refreshable Braille display. My mani means of communication is Braille and it has been for almost 35 years.

I am currently doing up a plan to start a regular support group for autistics here where i live as we have a coffee and chat once a month for 90 mins with an agency.

I have been coordinating groups for many years with my autism and i am getting better at managing my anxiety and meltdowns with it.

Cheers

Jim

Hi Jim :)

Ah, I see. It sounds like you've got a system that works for you. I admire you for having been able to organise regular group meetings, for autistics. I'm glad they help you to manage better too.

Vanilla

I am far from perfect it is coordinating them and being in the deep end thrown in mind you i have failed picked myself up, dusted myself off and got on with it.

The group will be fully accessible to all with Autism and alternate format as needed for the individual as that is part of my training so no one misses out or has to wait to access what a sighted person can.

I just had a meltdown when i looked at the task then got on with it and overcome the narrow focus an aspie has to get the big picture then the fine details

Jim
